New DCIS diagnosis in Brisbane

Hi all, I've had two lumpectomies now for DCIS, which was caught in a routine mammogram/ultrasound. I'm waiting for the final pathology results from the last op and will then move on to radiation therapy. I'm wondering what the wait times are like in the public system (probably RBH). My mum is worried I'll be waiting too long but the cost from the private surgeries/pathology/screening/anaesthetics etc. was around $5K before rebates. Does anyone have an idea of how long I'll wait and if that wait will be okay?
  • Welcome to the Blog, @Beccy .....

My Rad Onc & treatment and Medical Onc were/are both on the public system and I couldn't fault them .... tho I DID go private for my surgery - and yes, fairly substantial out of pocket expenses ..... in excess of $5000 over the last 5 years (but was fully advised of the Surgery Gap.)

Mums are always 'mother hens' - no matter their age ..... trying to shield you xx

They usually wait for your wounds to heal before actually starting Rads ...... so it could be 4 weeks .... or even more, depending on how you've healed.   My Rad Onc said I could have had my holiday before the Rads treatment, but I preferred to get it out of the way - so I could reward myself with the holiday afterwards!  ;)

As @Blossom1961 says - the wait is the worst - it sucks.   Try & keep as busy as you can, doing what you love or even try something NEW too! ;) .... and feel free to check out this post for other areas on the blog that you may be interested in .... even some 'fun stuff' - as we all need a laugh now & then! ;)

take care & I hope you get your Appointments soon xx

  • Thank you so much. It’s hard to ignore mums concerns but I keep telling her I’m a sensible women with four children and are not prone to making silly choices ;). It’s good to hear and read about others journeys here.
  • I went public and couldn't fault the times. They will rush it if they think it is called for. Being public doesn't mean you will receive less care. Your team will be doing everything possible for the best outcome. The wait is always the hardest but be assured things are under control. Sending big hugs. Try to ignore your mums stress. You have enough on your plate.
