Colds and chemo questions

My three year old has very kindly shared her latest cold with me and today my nose is pouring and throat burning.

As I'm going through chemo and my immune system is down anyway, should I be worried? Is it likely to progress into anything nastier than just the cold? Can I take cold and flu tabs? Has anyone else had a cold whilst going through chemo?

Any advice greatly accepted. :)

  • Thanks everyone. I am keeping a very close on eye on it but I think my body is fighting it pretty well. Those neulasta injections, nasty as they are, must be doing their job of keeping my white blood cell count up. Keeping an eye on the cough that has developed but so far so good.

  • So sorry to hear that. I have just had round 4 in my chemo with 4 more to go and came down with a sore throat  just before my 2nd chemo thanks to my 5yr old. This turned into a very nasty virus that I am still battling 7 weeks later. I ended up with 2 ear infections and a chest infection.

You might be lucky and it might just be a cold but keep an eagle eye on it as you body cant fight things normally. My friend had a cold and that it all it ended up being. I hit the jackpot! Because I ended up with infections my temp went up and I ended up in hospital on 2 occasions so keep an eye on your temp.

    Good luck

  • Check your neutropenia info list ...but if feeling really shivery and sore throat...especially with high temp...off to hospital.  Better to check than not. Kath

  • Hi Gurneys. Because everyone's experience and reactions are different, it's best to check with someone on your medical team.

  • Just finished 6 mths of chemo. In the 10 days I also developed a runny nose and lost my voice all in the final week of chemo. I have a terrible cough. But there isn't much you can do. I guess keep an eye on your temperature.  I have not taken anything for the nose drip.  But I do make up my own cough medicine.  Honey, warm water and apple cider vinegar.  Hope it clears up soon.

    take care.
