Ask questions

Hi everyone,

I am now having my 4th dose of radiation( breast (primary),lung, shoulder and C1 andC2 on my spine(secondaries). This has been over 13 years, the last three in the past 12months. I am starting to get a little peeved with some medical staff. If you question them, they seem to make you feel as though you are not meant to know.

I questioned the rad. Technician about the amount of radiation ie number of times he said I was to have as it differed from what the doc said. The look on his face was similar to my son when he was a teenager whenI told him what to do. He said he would ask the doctor. Did the doctor get back to me or them. No!

Today I was reluctant to have treatment until someone investigated the swelling in my glands in the neck. Got the look again, can't possibly be the radiation . Fortunately another tech decided to get me into see a doctor, not my own.

Wow what a difference. He listened, he questioned the planning team and he was going to ring my normal guy and sought it out. He explained that my glands will become inflamed by the radiation and to expect a very dry mouth. He understood that I'm a little gun shy at the moment. He made me a lot more confident.

So after griping, I suppose the moral of the story is we know our bodies and we should question if we are not sure or happy.

I hope everyone is travelling well and feeling okay at the present moment.

Cheers

Karel????????

  • Thanks for the reminder, my first instinct is to believe everything they say, but it is becoming more obvious that I need to start asking more questions - so many different opinions between the doctors!!

  • Great advice Karel.  Something so simple as listening to you can make a big difference.  I think listening for dummies should be a requirement in medical school.
