surgery is in less than 4 hours..

Hi Ladies

Just a short post as I am about to head off to hospital for my mastectomy and reconstruction.  Will hopefully get back online in a day or so depending on how I feel. Apparently I wont be moving much in the first 24-48 hours...(which is not normal for me...hehe)...I'll be bed ridden for a day or so and will have not only 3 drains in me (one in the breast, one in the armpit and one in the abdomen), I will have a catheter as well which is something I have never had before.

One question though...why does the room you are in in the ward have to be "warm"?? Just wondering...

Anyways, I am off. keeping positive that all goes well. I may be in ICU for the first few hours after surgery or even overnight for the more one on one nursing.

Cheers for now

  • Hope things are looking good on the other side Rachael. I have to say I was just released yesterday after my lat dorsi recon & I am sure we had the coldest room on the ward. I ended up with 2 of those cotton blankets & the cover on me every night & then I had long pants & socks on too !!!!  Maybe the warmth isn't  such a problem  if the flap is still attached. I would have loved a bit more heat. Be thankful its winter & just pretend you're  snuggled in somewhere  nice for a little holiday.

    Best of luck

  • Hi Rachel, just wishing you all the best with your surgery today, and hope you recover well. I had a DIEP reconstruction last year, similar to the TRAM flap recon which you are having, and the reason they warm the room and/or put you under a heated blanket is to encourage blood circulation, particularly to the new breast. Best wishes, take it as easy as possible, it is a big op, and let us know how you got on when you are up to it. Jane xx
