Post mastectomy shoulder pain

Hi Ladies,

I had mastectomy, reconstruction, recurrence, removal of implant(another mastectomy) and finished chemo and radiation on April 2020.

My question is i keep on getting this bad shoulder and neck stiffness and pain on the right side where my surgery was, I was wondering if anyone experienced the same. I called the breast clinic physio and she is no help, didn’t even bother to ask me to come in to have a look. Also if I have any issues am I meant to follow with them or a private physiotherapist?

would love to hear from you beauties. much appreciated.
  • Hi, Hope13 just wondering if you have had in roads into PMPS if any doctors can diagnosed. thanks KinkyKia
  • @HOPE2013 is fsh a training hospital like Charlies? My physio has just refered me to the physio section of the hospital. It was with a  student but a qualified physio was there and working on me as well. It was very good. I've also got follow up appointments for weeks ahead. I'd try and get it done through the hospital as you might need the feferal ones later. I thought under public all our treatment can be done at the hospital. Also after radiotherapy I've had to start the stretching exercises again as I couldnt do it whilst having treatment and rad is not kind! Good luck with it all. 💗🤗
  • @Hils I went through Fiona Stanley initially I had a lovely physio but she is retired now and I had my surgery Sept last year that’s why. But my GP has gave me referrals I will try. It comes and goes the pain but yeah surgery sight is quite tender and tight sometimes.
  •  @hope2013 I've  just seen your post and have very sore shoulders , I had a double mastectomy.  I have been blameing it on the hormone blockers that I have to take. But on going to the physio at Charles(scgh) she said my posture is bad due to protecting my wounds! So that is not helping. So its shoulders back 'chest ' out now when I remember! What hospital did you go through? I have free physio at Charles and shes really good.
  • A bit late. I see a physio, Lizzie Eastwood, at Ramsay Health Plus- at the back of Hollywood Hospital. She’s very good, might be worth a visit.
  • Thank you ladies appreciated.
@kinkykia I will look into Dr Arlene definitely. Thank you.
  • Hope2013, If in WA look at Dr Arlene Chan she is a specialist in BCA and may have information that could help you or guide you to the correct person.
  • Hope2013, I would look at Dr David Studderfield an American Bca Surgeon referencing:Post Lumpectomy/Mastectomy Syndrome. Also look at Marjorie Brooks American Therapist;occupational Therapist regarding Iron Lung feeling regarding scar tissue and pain in shoulders. I am not sure what state you are but look for foundations connected to Bca and side effects. Take care
  • I had shoulder pain which ended up being frozen shoulder . Very painful. I saw my GP who referred me to a shoulder specialist. He sent me to get a cortisone injection guided by radiology and the relief was immediate. I hope you get some help.
  • Hi @Hope2013 I had pain for months after my surgery. My surgeon informed me that it is due to the weird position they have you in for a lengthy period of time during surgery. I am twenty months post surgery and my shoulder still gets twinges.
