Diep surgery recovery
hi everyone
I’m having double mastectomy and diep reconstruction in about 3 weeks and I was wondering if anyone could give some insight into recovery and how they managed once at home from hospital ? Are you able to move around the house yourself and do small things like make a sandwich ?
They have said to expect to be in hospital for 7 nights
Thanks!!

- kmakmMemberWell now REALLY... There is a hospital wide shortage, no absence, of Heparin. So since Tuesday I've been having once daily stinging shots of Clexane that leave nasty bruises, instead of twice daily shots of Heparin that doesn't bruise but stings like a mo fo. My thighs are like pin cushions!
- FinchMemberWow! Six days! That'd be a doozie . wink:
- kmakmMemberYes thank you @Sister. It slowly righted itself a day and a half ago. I'm back to my normal low readings!
The problem then segued into a dreadful headache and a lot of retching nausea but 5mg of Endone fixed that yesterday afternoon. They're a result of my body processing the long general, all the other drugs, and the coming down of the physiological response to extensive surgery (the end of the endorphin release caused by all the 'cutting'). As the pain meds slowly reduce it's all a bit of a balancing act. They're both back today but not too bad so far so we'll see.
However best of all... drumroll please... motions!!! After six days, what a relief :s :) - SisterMemberI haven't wanted to disturb you @kmakm - have they got your bp under control yet?
- kmakmMemberJust woke up (cleaners came into my room) not sure yet!
- Jen79xMemberI’ll be following you ! Hope you are doing ok :)
- kmakmMemberStay tuned @Jen79x! Will be going home from my double mx & DIEP recon some time in the next few days. I'll let you know how I get on... ;)
- Jen79xMemberThank you !!
- nikkidMemberAt 38 and if you’ve got a reasonable level of fitness, you should be ok - but we just never know how we react to anaesthetic or medications. You can do the very best to plan and that will help; but then you need to give yourself some slack and let your body do the talking once it’s all done and dusted ...and be kind to yourself (as well as a bit selfish in those early days) x
- Jen79xMemberAnd I was just reading your stories @melclarity and @nikkid you both were amazing ! I hope I’m that lucky :)
i better go plan some meals to cook and freeze - great advise !
