Diep surgery recovery
hi everyone
I’m having double mastectomy and diep reconstruction in about 3 weeks and I was wondering if anyone could give some insight into recovery and how they managed once at home from hospital ? Are you able to move around the house yourself and do small things like make a sandwich ?
They have said to expect to be in hospital for 7 nights
Thanks!!

- kmakmMemberThat sucks @"jackie 4". I hope you hear soon. BC is enough of a life interruption without having to wait ages for the final piece that will enable you to move forward. I wish reconstructions weren't considered such an afterthought by the public health system.
- jackie_4MemberI am on the waiting list for surgery. Was initially told 12 months which suited me as I was told to wait that period of time after radiation treatment anyway. It has now been 18 months waiting and have not heard anything. :(
I can understand there are a lot of people waiting but hate being in limbo. In the process of wanting to put our house up for sale and moving but don't want the call up for surgery to happen in the middle of everything.
Was a D cup but only wanting a C maximum. - kmakmMemberOoh I tried one of those tops on in DJs last Friday @nikkid! Haven't worn one since my teens. I felt so bold! Didn't buy it but will look into it next summer... the possibilities!
- nikkidMemberMy operation was 6 hours (I had already had a left vertical skin sparing mastectomy 12 months earlier) and I went from a DD to a D....things fit that little bit better which is nice.
And, in answer to your question, yes I do think it was all worth it. I love the result, I love the softness and warmth of my breast and (after having had an expander inserted as part of the mastectomy op) I hated the hardness of it and how it sat so high on my pectoral muscle. The new breast looks identical to its twin...and a bonus is I can wear off the shoulder tops and no bra (if ever I feel brave enough). :) - melclarityMemberI agree, I would LOVE to be smaller, I was an E cup but at reconstruction wouldnt reduce it because he had to match the other one. I'd ideally like to be a C these days, for that reason of clothes would fit so much better. Having said that, if your weight changes so does your cup size. I remember being told if I lost more weight, Im a size 12 that my cup size would reduce as normal with the Diep side. x
- kmakmMember@"jackie 4" I just wanted to add I'm enjoying not having a huge chest as well! I've gone from pendulous Es to perky C - Ds (won't know the final size until they settle down a bit more). Clothes look and fit better, and are easier to buy as a result. What size has the surgeon told you you'll be?
- jackie_4MemberThanks ladies, that is encouraging.
- melclarityMember@jackie 4 I had a single mastectomy with immediate diep flap reconstruction. Mine took 8hrs. It is a big op but so worth it for the results. X
- mum2jjMember@“jackie 4” mine took 9 hours with one mastectomy and bilateral TRAM, had already had one mastectomy.
Paula x - kmakmMember@"jackie 4" Mine took nine hours which included the mastctomy. Of course you are not aware of the passing of all that time! It does rake some recovering from, but the pain meds are good. You need to talke it very easy afterwards.
