Support for the Kids
Hi All,
Just wondering what support you have found for your children?
My 9yr old stepson has reacted with pretty severe mood swings since my diagnoses. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen with their children.
He doesn't know life without either his mother or I and I don't think it would have mattered if it had been her or myself diagnosed his reaction to the news would have been the same.
Is there any support groups for the kids?
Or should we just put him back into counselling (he had counselling last year to help with the transition of moving from her place to ours).
Thanks,
Narelle

Hi Narelle,
Sounds like your step son is having a tough time :-( I hope some of the others in the online network can share how they coped.
In the mean time - I am not sure if you have seen this page our our website (Telling your children - http://www.bcna.org.au/new-diagnosis/telling-your-children ) if not, have a look because there are some links off to other useful information e.g. Canteen 'My parent has cancer' - https://nowwhat.org.au/my-parent-has-cancer/

Hi Daina,
Unfortunately a lot of these resources are for teenagers. My children are 8 months, 6 yrs & 9 yrs. It is the 9 yr old who is struggling.

Hi Narelle,
My kids are 9, 7 and 5 years old. The 9 year old was most stressed when I was diagnosed. He is at a local public school that have access to a program called On Psych. The counsellor comes to our school weekly and sees kids that have been put on the program. We went to our GP to get a referral for a mental health plan for him which entitles him to (I think) six sessions with counsellor before an evaluation, after which he can get another 4 sessions if needed. My son has enjoyed these sessions. They have provided him with reasurrance and he has also used them to address some other schoolyard issues he is having. Hope this helps.
