Chemo Cost

Hi I am sitting at home contemplating many things and one thing which I do not have the answer for is cost of Chemo.

Is this claimable thru Medicare ??

I rang my healthfund and they could not talk to me unless I had an iten no.

I am seeing Oncologist on Thursday and obviously will get this info but in the meantime i am thinking this will cost a bomb.

Any answers would put my mind at ease in the meantime till I see him..

Thanking You

Sue

  • Hi Sue,

i actually had my chemo done through the public system, so it was fully covered by medicare . i saw my oncologist  on a wednesday after work, had my bloods done on a thursday before i went to work and then had my treatment done on a friday.

hope this is helpful to you.

    take care

  • i also had mine on medicare in public hospital, so didnt cost me anything, for chemo, or radiotherapy. Remember to write down all the questiions you have to ask, so you remember them, i know i needed my husband to remember questions we needed answered. even then i thought i was taking in the answers when half the time i wasn't, so someone to go with you or paper and pen at all times is great.

  • I hope you dont think I am being nosey, but if I have private health insurance can I still opt for the public system, as we are on one wage now and this will be extremely difficult for us if it costs alot.  Sue

  • I'm not sure on that one Susan, but i wouldnt see why not, also i have heard a few of the girls saying something about redrawing on your super fund. will get one of the girls to get in touch with you as i think she done it. hope all goes well today, let us know how it goes.

  • hey Sue

i had chemo through public system but i still had to pay, like a perscription for each drug and any meds i took home even thouh i was a public patient.. go figure.. it cost around $80- $100 each month

my Mum also has just finished chemo and had private health but she also opted for public treatment so Yes you can definaetly choose to be a public patient.

    hope that helps

  • Hi Sue

I've just received my second chemo treatment going public in Qld.  The meds that are required after chemo cost $30 to $40 per visit.  I'm opting to go private for my radiation treatment which will cost me about $1400 out of pocket.  I don't have private cover but their facilitiy is only 20 mins away whereas the public system is 40 min to an hour away depending on traffic.

    :)

  • Hi Mel,

Thankyou for your information, good to hear I can opt for either....I  wont know till next Thursday where my Oncologist will send me , but with this info on hand it will be better.

    Thanks again Sue

  • Hi Luanne,

well thankyou for your info, at least I have an idea, honestly I ha a feeling it would be thousands and thousands of dollars, so at least I can sleep a little better now.

Thankyou again and best of luck with your treatment.

    Sue
