Where to have radiotherapy?

Hi, I hope to get some feedback about where to have radiotherapy treatment. I live in Melbourne. Was thinking the Austin because its close to home, but now wondering if Peter Mac is better or perhaps a private facility? Are they all the same? I know some public hospitals are training hospitals, so not sure if that effects anything?
  • @staton I live in Bendigo and had my radio in the local public hospital but under the Peter Mac umbrella. I could not fault them. Private does not necessarily equate to better. New procedures meant I did not need the tattoo marks. Ask which hospitals have this new option so you don't need the tatts.
  • I'm afraid the cost and gap of private RT was a deciding factor. Apparently Private can be negotiable, but I was warned it could be $3000. Health insurance does not cover this. As it is not hospital treatment. I hope and presume my care was just the same.
  • I had my surgery private (with a fairly large gap fee to pay out - but it was done just days after my first meeting with my surgeon ) and then my Rads and Medical Onc were Public - 100% no cost and wonderful Oncs.  I had the same onc all the way thru too, unless they were on leave, then a locum stepped in (some think you'll get a different person each time on Public - not so with me.)

Going private for Rads can be VERY costly.

All the best for your decision making, @staton

  • I went private for surgeon only for my first surgery (hospital was public), then opted for public for radiation and medical oncologist. Rads was at Genesis Care, and medical onc at the Kinghorn, in Sydney. Both these institutions are both private and public I think, but I had no choice but to choose public. I also had the same radiation and medical oncs all the way through, and they were wonderful. I have no doubt I received the best care possible. Very knowledgeable and skilled people, who made sure everything was 100%.
That was there, and I’m really not sure what it’s like in Melbourne, but I doubt your care would be any less. They’re professionals either way.
    Good luck hun 🙏🏻💗.
