My Green Tea Story
Hello ladies
Reading todays West Australian and saw an article on machi (I think) - or green tea leaves. Sure they said the cancer foundation had agreed that green tea was good for cancer patients. Reminded me of this:
My daughter works in an nursing home. She had commented quite a few times over a couple of years, on a couple that were there, that didn't fit the profile - they weren't that old, still had there licenses, a car and went out often. Anyhow on Thursday I was diagnosed, the breast gp confirmed cancer with no tests -they were just working out the stage I was at. So I wasn't telling family yet. On Saturday Kasey told me she finally found out about the couple. She had cancer (don't know what sort) had had a pile of treatment and was now palliative. Her husband couldn't cope so they entered the nursing home. A friend of hers told her to start drinking green tea - so she did - sipped it constantly she said. And the cancer had gone??
I felt this was prophetic considering my circumstances, and have been drinking green tea since - mind you I still havent acquired a taste for it, and December last year I had a cup of coffee - oh you should never cut something out so completely - I now crave coffee - But I only allow myself 2 cups in the morning. The rest of the day I drink green tea!! Food for thought. Oh and this lady is still fine and cancer free (4 years).

I love stories like this, and I think it's probably true.As long as we don't forego our prescribed treatment for the unknown,I think it's great to try different things.Sometimes what we believe in actually happens:):) Cheers Robyn xox

Thanks Robyn
Wouldn't it be nice if some of these healthy things tasted nice though. I tolerate the tea with mint or lemon, but I am now so craving coffee.... why??? When I have a sleepless night I actually look forward to the morning coffee!! I didn't have coffee for 14mnths, never thought it was super important to me before, just can't get this one. Does my body need the caffeine - but thats in tea too - Go Figure.

I also gave up coffee because I used to drink bucket loads of the stuff!after my osteoporosis diagnosis,I just stopped, because I know NOW that excess caffeine strips calcium from our bodies. However, when my daughter and I are out shopping,we often stop for a 'coffee'.She likes chai, and I now have a 'flat white decaf!!!' And do you know what,I get the same pleasure from it as a regular coffee!!! I reckon it's just the habit for me now,not the caffeine addiction.Give it a try.:):) Cheers Robyn

Hi Pam,
I have a similar story about a type of Green Tea, not long after I was diagnosed in may this year my hubby had to stay home from work to fix a radiator leak in our car, he needed to go to wreckers and our neighbour couldn't take him immediatly so he caught a taxi and the driver was from Indonesia and they were talking and he told the driver that I had recently been diagnosed with bc and he was telling him about a tree that the leaves you can boil and it makes a green tea the tree is called a soursop tree it also has a fruit but the leaves are a natural remedy for cancer especially bc and brain tumours etc, we were willing to try anything the driver took him to this ladies house she's asian my husband is sri lankan and herbal remedies are very big in asian countries he met the lady and he told her about our circumstances and told us we can go there anytime and take as much as we want as she has several of these trees and gives leaves not just to us but others also so I looked up a recipe of how to make the tea on a good website and as we live in Darwin they grow the trees everywhere up here, he made the tea and I have to drink 1 teacup 3 times a day and have done since may, another benefit from the tea is if you have chemo it can reduce most of the side effects and that is true as I have just had my 1st cycle of chemo with hardly any side effects, I was sceptical at first but I thought what have I got to lose absolutly nothing and so much to gain, I just want others to know about this If I can help someone in a small way whether it be drinking this tea or advice or any kind of support I'm up for it as my husband allways says I allways think outside the square. I have had 2 surgeries a lumpectomy and a sentinal node biopsy which had cancer in it so I had to have a auxillary node clearance they removed 7 nodes all without cancer maybe it was the tea maybe not but I still drink it 3 times a day even when I was in hospital and my oncologist knows and all my doctors and nurses and they all say why not as long as I have the treatment what's the harm and I think what have I got to lose? I drink it cold and my hubby loves making it for me my 9yo helps him too as she knows it's mum's special medicine, I just wanted to tell you my story about my special green tea. Sending you a cuddle and a smile and positive vibes

Hey Anita thankyou, well they say there is a cure in nature for everything. Does it taste ok? That reminds me of another story - go-go or jo-jo berries - I had been reading about them and my daughter in law said that they gave there horses these for cancer!!
You never know, and the positive feelings of helping yourself is priceless.

Hi Pam,
you have to boil the leaves and part of the branch in water for half an hour the first time I tasted it I was practically this is yuk but I knew maybe it will help me in the long run so I got used to the leafy taste so to speak you can drink it hot or cold I prefer it cold it tastes a little better but you can't add sugar to it I just like it cold it really tastes no different to green tea really just natural I like it and I believe it's helping me, sending you a cuddle and a smile.

Dear Pam,
It's Lisa from the Policy Team. I wanted to jump in and say that there is no evidence that green tea cures cancer. BCNA would encourage you to talk to your health professionals about the best treatment options for you and also about green tea.
We have some information about complementary therapies and complementary medicines on our website which you might be interested in. Though it is important to talk to your medical team about any complementary medicine or therapy you may be thinking about, as it may interfere with your breast cancer treatment or cause unwanted side effects.
Warm regards,

Thanks Lisas
I had never thought to look it up. My story was true, but who knows, cancer can go into remission all by itself..and many believe positive feelings help. Pity a lot of these things haven't had more study but I know money or lack of.
I don't think refusing treatment is a good option and my onc knew I was drinking it. He also knew about the applle cider vinegar - the green smoothies - olive oil - cod liver oil-vit C etc. (Never mentioned vit c, nor did the radio onc which was a bit disappointing, but they knew I wasn't taking mega doses of any) The vinegar died a quick death during chemo!!
