Triple negative & BRCA1

hi just found out yesterday i am braca 1 pos and that my cancer diagnosed 7 yrs ago was triple neg , i had partial mastectomy chemo and radio   was a high grade 3 medulary ductal carcinoma.

So trying to get my head around this will need surgery to have one fellopian tube and ovary removed , as when i had my hyster i was young and they left one so i wouldnt go into early menopause great.

I am going to just have extensive screening for now dont want a double mastectomy not because of looks or anything just havent got to that point of thinking yet.

Can you explain more about triple neg to me pls?

  • Thank you Fran, I had a good result.  The pathology report on my double mastectomy showed no evidence of disease so I am now recovering from the surgery and have a date to return to work.  I wish you well, (hugs).

  • goodluck with your scans hope all si clear its a worry every time we have to have these. . thanks for the reply xxxx

  • I have the faulty gene and was told by the genetic doctor that it makes cancer cells more vunerable to chemo damage.  It seems that due to BRCA genes the cancer cells can't repair like normal cells.  My sister had advanced ovarian cancer and due to the gene defect, she defied the odds and is now in remission.  I have my follow up scans tomorrow so it will see how the chemo has effected my TNBC.

  • Hi Fran,

I was diagonased TNBC, stage 3 in May 2013 with the BRCA1 chaser in August 2013 @ 41. What a year!

I was booked to have radiation in January this year, but decided to have Bilateral mastectomy with recon & a hysterectomy & oophorectomy once my oncologist threw a few numbers my way....here is what I was told....it may not be the same for you...

I was told that my chances of it coming back within the next 5 years was 87%. Although chemo works wonders for TN, if you get it a second time, it's not nearly as effective. The Ovarian cancer risk was sitting at 45%. I didn't need to take the surgey options, as heavy monitoring was on the cards, however, the speed at which TN grows was not worth the risk to me.

Now that I've had the surgeries, my recurrence risk is sitting at 8% lifetime....those numbers are sitting better with me :)

BRCA throws such a different spin on things for us. I wish you all the best in your decision making.
