Hi Fran,
I was diagonased TNBC, stage 3 in May 2013 with the BRCA1 chaser in August 2013 @ 41. What a year!
I was booked to have radiation in January this year, but decided to have Bilateral mastectomy with recon & a hysterectomy & oophorectomy once my oncologist threw a few numbers my way....here is what I was told....it may not be the same for you...
I was told that my chances of it coming back within the next 5 years was 87%. Although chemo works wonders for TN, if you get it a second time, it's not nearly as effective. The Ovarian cancer risk was sitting at 45%. I didn't need to take the surgey options, as heavy monitoring was on the cards, however, the speed at which TN grows was not worth the risk to me.
Now that I've had the surgeries, my recurrence risk is sitting at 8% lifetime....those numbers are sitting better with me :)
BRCA throws such a different spin on things for us. I wish you all the best in your decision making.
