Discussion about surgery with Surgeon
Hi all, I have been diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and I have my first meeting with the surgeon on Thursday. I know to expect surgery soon but dont know if this will be lumpectomy or mastectomy. I know that this will be one of the things to discuss on Thursday but I am curious if there is a 'choice' - in a sense part of me just wants to be told which option but I wondered if anyone here made a decision one way or the other and how they felt about that? Am also putting this query in the treatment thread as I have not posted before and not sure which is better for this. Thanks for any thoughts.ER/PR+ HER2- invasive lobular
I’m a 47 yr old mum of one 6 yr old. I received my ER/PR+ HER2- invasive lobular cancer diagnosis this week. Due to strong family history (mum passed away at 62 in 2012 with triple negative BC- and her mother also passed away at similar age from BC type unknown as it was late 1970s) - my sister and I had started the process of having additional screening etc. My mammogram and Ultrasound in Jan this year was clear - MRI last month showed something- which following a core biopsy has revealed 3mm ER/PR+ HER2- invasive lobular cancer. As I was already under care of private breast surgeon due to wanting extra screening etc- I feel grateful to have already talked to her about surgery options and possible surgery week of 12th January. I went for genetic testing this week and now wait to see results. Am weighing up option of double mastectomy(and reconstruction) - though surgeon has advised its very early and very small so lumpectomy and sentinel node surgery is a very feasible option too. Followed by radiation therapy and tamoxifen. If I chose a mastectomy it may reduce my need for radiation and tamoxifen.
Where it all started
In February I had weight loss surgery and in may I turned 50 and with that came the mammogram reminder. About 6 weeks ago and with a 40kg weightloss I was diagnosed with a stage1, 1cm malignant lump. It hit me like a tonne of bricks. If it wasnt for my weightloss they may never have found it. I got my referral to see the surgeon who wanted me to have a bilateral ultrasound prior to seeing her. At my appointment she told me I had 2 additional lumps in my right breast and 1 in my left. My head was spinning out of control. Started thinking the worst. She sent me for a biopsy and those additional lumps turned out to be cysts. Fast forward a month and today I have had my breast surgery to have the cancer removed as well as a therapeutic mamoplasty to make them symmetrical. I am absolutely beyond thankful to Dr Poon for the amazing job she has done. I have gone from an F cup to a small D large C with 450g removed from left and 380g removed from right. I dont m so thankful to this site it has given me alot of information and answers to the questions I needed answered
