THanks for accepting me into the group.I have just been diagnosed,and my surgery is next Tuesday. I am a bit anxious but I am trying to take things a day at a time.Is there anything I should know about having a mastectomy,that you know because you have been through it?Thanks Robyn

- Hi Robyn, I found having ice chips in yr mouth whilst the infusion being done helped, saved from mouth ulcers... Some of the other ladies in the group may have some other tips as well, light meals after chemo are usually the better to stick with as well.. Best wishes for a reasonably good run with yr chemo.. - No one looks forward to Chemo. Like everything to do with having BC it is an unknown at first. I have just finished my Chemotherapy and start radiotherapy on the 9 Oct. Chemo was awful but in some ways not as bad as I imagined. The medical staff were terrific and that helped. Even though it seems like a lot to get through, the time actually went quite quickly once you get started. I feel mentally great to be finished but very lacking in energy still at the moment. I am really glad to have it behind me but reassured that I have done it as insurance against any chance that the cancer cells had gone wandering! With regard to minimizing the effects of Chemo, I found lots of good advice from people on here. Just ask if you need advice with anything in particular. Hope it goes well for you. Take care. - Well I am home.you were all right:)it wasn't too bad!the sentinel nodes biopsied llook ok.I have to see my surgeon on Monday.I want to just say thanks again.I was so scared before the mastectomy,and you ladies really helped me stay calm.robyn

- The tips above are good re the button front pjs etc. I had a mastectomy in April. I too didn't find it that painful. The tip I would add is, make sure you move your arms after the surgery. You will have drains in but I made the mistake of protecting my arm too much and I am still now struggling with cording, 6 months down the track. The breast care nurse will probably talk to you about this when she comes in to see post procedure. Good luck, you will be fine Vanessa :)

- Hi Robyn I found the operation was not too bad and only needed panadol after the first night. I had 3 nights in hospital and kept one drain in for ten days. No other problems all healed well. Hope all goes well for you and let your family look after you. Robyn d.
