So very scared

Hello.  I'm 31 yo mother of 2 girls.  I was diagonised with TNBC earlier this month and yesterday received the news from my lymph node biopsy that the caner is in there too.

I have tried to stay positive, but the news has just bowled me over and I'm finding it difficult.

I'm going through the public system and have spoken to a couple of Monash Breast Specialist and have decided to do a lumpectomy, but I was asking about having a mastectomy, just scared it will come back again.

What questions did you ask about the chemotheropy?

Not sure what I need to know...

  • I do understand your fear - but as Sue says, there are a lot of positive stories on the TNBC site, and it is much better to read them than the statistics. (TNBC is relatively new, so there aren't many statistics to be had at the moment anyway!)

I also had TNBC and was diagnosed exactly a year ago this Easter. I had surgery, 12 weeks of chemo, and 28 zaps of radiotherapy. Maybe you could ask your surgeon if a portacath would be a good move for you? Then the chemo nurses can access your vein painlessly to give you your chemo - it depends on your veins, but a port is so easy. It was the best thing, so if they offer it to you, don't be afraid to take it.

Just take each day as it comes, and don't look too far ahead - the time will pass faster than you think. Keeping a journal can be a big help, and it helps to keep track of your appointments, side effects, questions, pill timetables, etc.

When we first go into the treatment tunnel, it is dark and scary - but every week you are closer to the end of treatment and life is brighter again. Hang in there, Michelle - you are stronger than you think and you will get through this - just take it one day at a time.

Big hugs - let us know how you are going -

    Michelle R xx

  • Hi,

I was diagnosed with triple negative bc in Nov 2012 and am almost at the end of 5 months of chemo. I decided to have my surgery after chemo as this give the oncologist the chance to see if the chemo has worked. I had 10 tumors to start with and also lymph involvement. The good news is that the chemo has shrunk the tumors - the largest was 5cm and is now 7mm and the smaller ones have disappeared.

I will not get out of having a masectomy but it is good to know that the chemo has worked.

Look up the Triple Negative Group on this site their are a lot of other pink sisters like yourself out there. Don't look at the statistics look at others for inspiration.

    Good luck

  • Thank you!  I think I need to get off the internet now!  Too many negtive readings this morning.  I will go a lay down with my little one until the sun comes up.

    Thanks again Fiona.

  • Hi there, Obviously I am not the only one that cant sleep! Sorry I dont know much about TNBC (I am progesterone and oestrogen positive), but thought that i would just reply to say that you are not alone and that you will find heaps of people on here that can provide advice. Just take it a day at a time and write down any questions you might have for the experts so you dont forget to ask them when you are in a fluster!

    All the best
