Silicon implant pain

I've had my implants in now for 3 weeks, after a mastectomy in July and expanders in straight away, after being diagnosed with DCIS. My right implant is sore to touch, and also get sore when I lift my arm. When I mentioned it to my surgeon he said its probably my muscle, which I can understand for the pain that occurs when I move my arm, but the soreness to touch concerns me. Has anyone had any experience with this?

  • Hi Tan, I didn't have expanders but immediate reconstruction with silicone implants. My plastic surgeon went through all the options with me prior to the surgery - has your surgeon done this with you? Anyway, what I gathered from the discussions is that the round ones give a fuller look and are good if one wants to go "big" on top, downside is that they may give bit of a fake look (think of fried eggs, heh..), especially on a slim body. My surgeon & I agreed on teardrops for a more natural look (I have a slim frame) and the modern silicone implants are not too bad as they are quite soft and won't leak into the body if they should rupture for some reason (which is unlikely). The silicone ones also come in smooth and textured varieties, with textured one giving a more natural feel. There are saline implants available too and whatever you end up with should be the best match for your own body size and shape, e.g. to me the saline implants looked a bit saggy but probably would look fine in the right type of body.  PS. despite the name "teardrop" they don't droop so can easily go braless :)

Wishing you all the best to your implant surgery Tan. If you have any more questions I'm happy to help!  Annie

  • Hi girls

I have had a bilateral mastectomy 2.5 weeks ago, with immediate tissue expander reconstruction.  Im having my last fill on the 11th april and need to decide wether i want round or tear drop implants when my expanders come out...  Does anyone have any advice for me ?

    Thanks so much

  • I had mast & immediate implant recon in June 2011 & I have never been pain free since, its not pain that I take anything for ....except when I had a bleed behind the implant. The bleed made me feel like my chest was about to explode because it had basically expanded my skin another 200ml from behind the implant......anyway I have had to return to the physio because of terrible pain that wasn't going away after the surgery to fix the bleed in november 2012. It was/is in my shoulder & the muscle over the implant, I had shocking restriction of movement & since having some more physio it is easing slowly, there is a bit of contracture happening too (post rads) so I hope this helps with that as well. I would get to your post surgery physio & see if they can help.
