Sentinel node and mastectomy

I was diagnosed with grade 3 idc 3 weeks ago. I had a mastectomy yesterday and WAS to also have a sentinel node biopsy. But when i saw surgeon this morning, after op yesterday, he told me he had to take a few more nodes/glands as they were enlarged.  I was too doped up to fully comprehend and si asked no questions. Does anyone know what this means? As far as i knew he was only to do the mastectomy and just the sentinel to biopsy?
  • Good to hear you've had your surgery @bevvzy - it's good that the surgeon took the enlarged nodes because you'll then get a better idea of the pathology. Look after yourself during this recovery period (hopefully the physio has seen you and has talked about some of the simple hand exercises and strategies to help recovery). One day at a time. Take care and as Melinda says, we can't control the results, but we can be kind to ourselves.  Nikki xxx
  • @bevvzy I hope the surgery went ok, sounds like he did do the sentinel node biopsy and found also though some more enlarged nodes/glands and so took them. Don't know if it means anything, and I know its hard but best to wait for him to come around tomorrow, he will explain it all to you then, pathology wont be in yet though. Step at a time, try and rest as much as possible, its so hard when we cant control any of it. Hugs Melinda xo
