I did things the other way. Surgery first. I say physio for base line a few days before surgery but that was it. I had the lumpectomy and full ax clearance. I had minor cording afterwards but a couple of physio sessions sorted that out. It is very important that you do the exercises. I found the physio quite painful the first week but improved quickly. Honestly the more you can do the better, especially the wall walk and the ones above your head.
I've never had a problem with lymphodema and had full strength back in that arm within three of four months.
