Infection following surgery

It's 4 weeks on from surgery for aux dissection (had aux clearance & lumpectomy 4 years ago) and after a teary, painful weekend saw my GP who has given me antibiotics and pain relief medication for infection. It's still red and hard not to mention painful. How long does it take? Didn't have this problem first time round  :'(
  • @Renatha I am just catching up on some posts and came across yours.  Have the antibiotics kicked in?  I do hope you are feeling a lot better!
    Take care
  • It's very stressful when these things happen, particularly if the site is painful, and having an infection can make you feel really unwell. It's disappointing the nurses didn't get back to you, try again tomorrow. I know it's the last thing you want to do, but if you don't advocate for your own health, no one else will. Margxx
  • Thanks @Michelle_R and @Kagisha, I'm still wearing one of those bras at night :p - saw my GP again today, she still thinks the antibiotics will kick in yet, now have a patch for pain and something for anxiety. I have the appt for tomorrow I made already, if it's still not getting better, I will go back to the surgeon, though not keen to do so. I have a hardened area under armpit, she still doesn't think it needs draining. Left messages with both BCN's but didn't hear back from either. Let's hope tomorrow brings improvement all round.  :)
  • It is very frustrating to live with the pain and redness of cellulitis. I I had to change from Clyndamycin to Keflex because of reaction, now still discomfort at night especially and redness a bit better, but still hardened area in breast. Seeing the surgeon again tomorrow. Thinking of you all!
  • @Renatha - months after I finished surgery/chemo/rads a very nasty infection occurred along my scarline.   The area was hot to touch and red, and my GP immediately sent me to my surgeon's office.  The surgeon prescribed 2 scripts of Staphlex antibiotics, and followed up with a 3rd script before he was satisfied.  They didn't waste any time at all!  Please see your surgeon if you can - and definitely ask your GP for follow-up antibiotics if it hasn't cleared up.  As @zoffiel says, the results are not worth it!  Best of luck.  Michelle
  • Yes @Zoffiel I see the GP again tomorrow. She didn't mention cellulitis, but then I was squeezed in for appt. Sorry you've had this stuff too. I'm in regional Vic also, though first round of tx was in Melb. Thanks for your comment.
  • @renatha you will need to keep a very close eye on that. I'm assuming you have a follow up today or tomorrow to check how you are responding to the antibiotics. I've just had a run in with cellulitis. You don't want it. Sometimes these things can only be cleared up with IV antibiotics, which is a raving pain in the arse, but if that is what it takes, do it.

Sorry things are not going well, who has time for this stuff?
