Has anyone decided to have their ovaries removed rather than be on Tamoxifen?

I am not handling Tamoxifen very well and have made an appointment with the medical oncologist to discuss having my ovaries removed instead.  I've already had a hysterectomy so no issues there.  Has anyone decided to go down this avenue rather than be on hormone blocking therapy?  I understand that estrogen can stay in the fat cells for a length of time.
  • I had mine removed as I was still ovulating and wanted to avoid the zolodex injections that would have been necessary for me because I'd been prescribed aromatase inhibitors.

I was also nervous about ovarian cancer as there has been a bit of that in my family (no idea if it's genetic, but it was another 'con' when it came to keeping them)

Having your ovaries removed plummets you into deep menopause. I can't say it was pleasant at the time, but things eventually settled down.
I don't regret it for a second, but be prepared for the potential that you might be uncomfortable for a while. Mxx
  • Chat with your Oncologist!  We are all different in the way our bodies react!
Some of us get shocking side effects from Tamoxifen and the Aromatose Inhibitors and others sail through with very little!
My ovaries have shrunk but I am still on Tamoxifen and it's not that bad really, I think my body and my emotional self have adjusted accordingly

Here's a booklet, if you haven't seen it already

    Take care
    Best wishes
  • Hi @carolr, I did ask about doing this but my ovaries aren't producing much estrogen anyway. I too have had a hysterectomy. Have a chat to the oncologist. You can get a test to see what your ovaries are producing but you may not be producing much estrogen given you have had a hysterectomy. Maybe there are other hormone suppression treatments you could try.  Best wishes
