Fluid filled lumps
I went to see the Radiation Oncologist as I had very painful lumps near my lumpectomy scars. She got me to have an ultrasound which luckily revealed no nasties but I have fluid filled lumps (seromas?). Upshot was that I can leave them and eventually they will go away or I can go back to see the Surgeon who will drain them. Has anyone out there had theirs drained? If so what is the procedure? When the Oncologist told me the Surgeon could do that all I could see was this big needle and then I forgot to ask her any questions which I should have haha. I do want to be comfortable as have a holiday coming up and want to enjoy myself after what I have been through simce my journey become mid December 2015. Thanks all :-)

Hi Ady, most women have them. They are harmless fluid filled sacs. My breast surgeon asked my patholgist to drain them when I had to go back for a scan prior to surgery. It's painless. I think they just come back though. Not sure, you should check.

I am very glad that you are getting it done, Ady. There is truly nothing to worry about.

Hi Georginamary
That sounds painless!! Hope so. I have booked an appointment to see the Surgeon on Tuesday to see what he says and what he will do. Think I will be pleased to get rid of the soreness.

I forgot to add that it takes about five minutes only . They nurse or surgeon just gets you to lie flat on your back in the rooms, outs a towel underneath in case of drips, and in goes the needle and away goes your pain. Let us know how you go.

Hi Ady
Get them drained by all means, particularly if they are sore. As everyone says, it's usually quite painless. Keep an eye on the area though, they may refill. Apart from a return of the nuisance, warm fluid places in the body can be very attractive to bacteria and you do not want any infection. Discomfort, reddening or flu like symptoms are worth getting checked out straightaway if fluid returns. Chances are good that the draining will end the problem altogether.
Good luck.

Definitely go and get them drained. I had a seroma on my right breast drained four times after two lumpectomies in the same place, once by my breast care nurse, once by my plastic surgeon, and twice by my breast surgeon. There was a slight 'pop' when the needle went in, and that was it. A straw-coloured liquid is either drawn out or runs out, and the relief from pressure is enormous. There is no need to fear it at all. I asked for the last two to be done. You don't need to brace yourself for pain at all. Get it done and enjoy your holiday..

Thanks Jane221
Glad to hear all went well. My lumps are pretty big as Surgeon took a lot of tissue when he did the lumpectomy. I am still thinking on what to do lol

Hi Ady, I didn't have any pain with the draining of my seromas. The size of the needle is a bit disconcerting :-) but I honestly didn't feel anything. I also didn't watch what was happening and kept up the conversation with my surgeon as a bit of distraction! It can be a relief to have them drained, but often if they are small they will just settle themselves but it may take a little while. Hope this helps. Jane xx
