Drawn Mastectomy
Just before being taken into surgery, whilst waiting in the pre op room, my surgeons offsider (little lady with huge attitude - ugh) came to my side and told me to lift my arm. She then started drawing all over my boob. When I realised what she was doing I was devastated. I felt very traumatised and keep remembering it even though it was months ago. Is this standard procedure? Shouldn’t this be done when you are out of it?

- kezmuscMemberHmmmm....better than having the wrong side done. They do it while you are awake on purpose. Doesn't make it any nicer though and yes, they should probably warn you.
Oh dear @"Annie C". I bet that made you feel special  Terrible.Sign in to react to this post - BlackWidowMemberHi @Blossom1961 - agree with comments above. Think of it another way - at least you knew the correct boob was to be done as I worked in a hospital and heard of a man who'd had the wrong leg broken and reset ! If only he'd been awake when they were putting the arrow mark on his leg, eh ?
As @iserbrown said, try to spin the story around. Maybe in time it will be your ''funny'' story of the whole BC saga.
Take care and be happy you are still with us and have your sense of humour intact. I really wanted to get off that "slab" when the surgeon said to "hurry up, I have a long list".
Confidence inspiring - not.
Professional behaviour - definitely not.
Lesson learnt from that - speak up, ask what premeds are to be given. Never just lay there in silence. Be a nuisance.Sign in to react to this post - Frances54MemberHad completely forgotten this happened to me until I read your article. At the time it was the radiation guy and I was just glad he was finding the right spot. If its still bothering you then its important and you need to talk about it with someone skilled who can help you understand why. All the best.Sign in to react to this post
- arpieMemberI think mine must have been done whilst I was under! I don't remember it at all.
I think that ANYONE doing ANYTHING to your body should at least introduce themselves & explain what they are doing & why - especially relating to any surgery! That is just common plain old 'courtesy'!!Sign in to react to this post - kmakmMember@StarGirl No! You have to hunt one out if you feel you need to talk to someone. Sometimes you might be lucky enough to be treated at a centre that offers you one, but mostly you have to ask. K xoxSign in to react to this post
- StarGirlMemberI don’t remember being drawn on at all? Which is probably no help whatsoever - sorry
PS - does everyone have a counsellor? Am I supposed to have one?Sign in to react to this post - AfraserMemberI think that's the key! Stuff from people we don't like to begin with always rankles more, even more than a thoughtless remark from someone we do like. But time to let it go nevertheless, sure as eggs she's not fretting about it so nether should you. Best wishes.Sign in to react to this post

- Blossom1961MemberFunny thing is, I totally forgot about it. Then I remembered. Then I forgot. Then I rembered. Then I forgot. I think you get the picture! Maybe I need to book in to speak to someone and when I get there I will forget so I can just say “ I am here about the thingy” That about sums up this whole BC scenario.Sign in to react to this post
