Drain site pain after mastectomy
Im Day 2 post surgery and have quite a bit of pain at the site where my drains go in.
yesterday it hit me hard, they put up my pain meds but then the nurse dropped them overnight so by 10am I had another stabbing attack (that's what it feels like). I had to do the silent sobbing as crying made it hurt worse. They upped my meds again and I had a restful day but now the pain is back. If I sit just on the edge of the bed, hunched over with my hand over the site it stops the worst of it. I've had my pain meds just got to wait another 30 mins for my endo then that should take the edge off.
i found some pressure on the site helps with pain - I don't have a post op bra or anything - should I be wearing one at this point? Anyone else experienced this?

- They took out one drain today and it was instantly better. What a relief!
i had a day of just drifting in and out of sleep and now set up for a nights rest then will go home tomorrow :) - I was going to go home today but decided to stay. I have a 2 & 4 year old at home. As much as I miss them I really need the space and someone taking care of me for now.
Poor hubby is struggling dealing with them on his own but I know I would be absolutely no helpful and would only add to his load at home.
Its 1.30am, waiting on my next endo so I can grab a few more hours sleep. So tired but if I lay down it just starts hurting too much.
Mit is nice and quiet on the ward tonight :smile: - My surgeon told me that I would be in hospital for about two nights after mastectomy and Lymphnode clearance then I could go home with the drains being checked by the nurse each day. However she also said that if I didn't want to go home with two drains in I could stay longer.
If you are not confident going home with your level of pain, insist on staying in hospital longer.
I hope the pain is under control soon, it sounds absolutely miserable on top of everything else. - I don't think she did leave instructions. If it's not in the chart the nurses don't do it and I can't see it in there. I'll check tomorrow when I ask about leaving on Monday.
i got about 2 hours sleep when the endo kicked in but had to sit up again as I felt the pinch coming on.
I keep chanting in my head 'this sucks but it's better than cancer' - Sounds like the drain is caught up in some nerves.They won't take it out if there is a lot of drainage ie over 50mls in 24hrs.Hang in there and keep taking the drugs. It'll improve once the drain is out.
- My doctor wanted the drain output to be less than 20mls in 24hrs. I went home with mine on a Friday and then he took it out on Monday.
Did your doctor leave instructions with nursing staff about when to take it out? - That's exactly it @Melsie97 I can be perfectly fine and comfortable and then BAM the pain is excruciating. The pain meds dull it but I'm so scared of them wearing off.
It will be day 3 tomorrow so let's hope the drain comes out. Does the doc need to approve the drain out?
My doc isn't back till Monday. She said I could go home But I do t want to go home like this,
