Drain free...!!!!

Day 13 - after double mastectomy.

Yesterday was draining.... Literally... From the damn drains! So painful! ??

Had appointments with Breast Surgeon and Plastic Surgeon today...

While waiting to see Breast Surgeon, had another blow out with the stupid drain! All through the special carry bag and all over my hand! Eeww! Sorted that out and then it was time to see the dr...

All good news! Pathology was carried out on my breasts and my left breast came back all clear... Then he explained there were some marginal and scattered cells that were suspicious cells in my right breast (the one that had cancer) he called them pre cancerous, but explained that some of them may have or may not have turned into cancer... He also said had I have opted not to have the mastectomy he would have gone in again to clear them out simply because of the size of my initial tumour... So even though I had all that chemo... Suspicious cells were still floating around in there!his comments and information has cleared my mind that I made the right decision to remove BOTH breasts... See him again in 6 months...

Then a short walk up to the Plastic Surgeon... He was happy with the wounds and checked the drain outputs over the last few days and he decided it was ok to take the drains out!! NO MORE DRAINS!!! Hubby watched and I'm glad he did! He told me the right one was a looong way in... He said the left one was way shorter... That explains why the right side was so sore!!! And don't you just love it how the Dr's poke and prod the area? Well he soon stopped as I let out a yell and started to shake ... There's no infection at the drain site but it's very very tender, it was recommended to keep taking antibiotics just in case....

Sooooo after the drains were removed, onto discussing expansion...

I asked some questions about the tightness I'm feeling He went on to explain that he had to split my chest wall muscle to get the expanders into a suitable position, otherwise they would sit way to high.... And as a result they're tucked into part of my abdominal muscle too.... He said what I'm feeling is normal.... Onto the expansion, it should start asap.... So I'm booked in to start next Thursday... He warned me that it's not going to be fun and recommended I take a pain killer before my appointment ??

I can't tell you the relief it is to have those drains gone! Hubby even said I got colour back in my face and I looked more relaxed...

Time to celebrate! We went to Amici Di Kogarah for lunch.... Well, I can honestly say that was the first meal in six months that I could FULLY taste! Italian sausage and porcini mushroom risotto for me and hubby had linguini with prawn and octopus ... Deeeelicious! Then we wanted cappuccinos, so waitress advises us of the special ... Coffee and a house made cannoli for $6... She didn't have to twist my arm! I ordered pistachio and hubby had ricotta...... Yummy!! I thoroughly enjoyed every mouthful!

So you could say I'm a happy camper this afternoon... No more drains and a belly full of yummy Italian food!

Now to rest, restore and start building my strength so I can get back to 'normal'

  • Hi Jel! Yes both my surgeons are in Kogarah......Hubby and I grew up in Hurstville a street apart......I am having my first expansion this Thursday but it's at 2:30pm and to be honest I don't know how i'll feel afterwards, so maybe not this time.....but I'll definitely let you know when the next one is and we can meet for sure!

...and I knew what you meant....don't you love touchscreens/autocorrect? LOL

    Xx

  • OMG - mean PS (plastoc surgeon) - not 'PC'...

    Hate my touchscreen...

  • So glad it is all progressing and that the.drains are finally out (not about the pending prognosis of a painfull consult).

    Is your PC in Kogarah?

Had no idea you were in the areea - I am just 1 suburb away...

Please do let me know next time you are coming out to the area as I would live to buy you guys lunch as promissed (and not likely to be out your way for a few weeks yet until my chemo is over) and There is THE BEST Thai place just 3min drive out of Kogarah.

    Hugs

  • Great to hear things are starting to get a little better for you Tracey, no stopping you know, and that lunch looks so yummy enjoy?? lots of hugs.

    Cheers Jen ?? ?? ?? xx

  • It really is a turning point when the drains are gone and you stop feeling like an alien in a movie. A little bit of fluid build up wouldn't hurt anyway. They could drain that off next week and your expanders can take up the room the fluid was making.

You're all good. I bet you wished that meal time could go for hours. I made everyone drink 3 cups of coffee while they waited for me to finish my birthday meal. Luckily coffee was all free with the meals where I was and you could hop up and make your own.

  • The thought of drain removal makes me shudder - lengthy and weird was the sensation

  • Really a great day there...bet your mood improved being out, drains out and great food.
