Am I paranoid

Hi Everyone,

i found a lump over 2 weeks ago and because I have a history went straight to my gp had ultrasound just got my results and have been told I have mastitis let me explain I am 43 and have never breastfed don't have any other symptoms but concerned it is something else as have a large mass along the line of previous scar from 2 years ago. Feeling very confused I have previously 4 years ago had a pylloides tumor and a lumpectomy for a supposedly fibroademona 2 years ago .

am I going mad or do I get a 2nd opinion

thanks for reading

jane

  • If your gut feels it's not right go with that , you've got the choice, sometimes we don't get it. Even for peace of mind and a good nights sleep. Regards adean
  • Two years ago I developed mastitis and I was hospitalised for four days on IV antibitics. My boob was red, hot swollen, and I was having rigors and had a high temperature. I hadn't breastfed for 6 years. Once the mastitis had resolved I had a mammogram which was followed by an USS and a core biopsy which showed I had fibrocystic breast disease. Mastitis is usually quite an acute illness and can leave you feeling very ill. Given your history a second opinion would help give you peace of mind. All the best Fiona.

  • Hi jane I had an ongoing sore red hot breast just below the nipple off and on for about six years I was told it was a blocked milk duct In February this year I went for a checkup with my new doctor for my hypothyroidism tests and mentioned the sore breast to him Immediately sent for mammogram, ultrasound and surgeon The area I complained about all these years showed a 100mm mass of dcis By May I had wide incision (1.3kg of tissue taken) and sentinel node biopsy So no I don't think your mad I would most definitely ask for further investigation especially when you have a history All the best

  • I think that a second opinion would give you peace of mind.I do know, that you can get mastitis even if you have never breast fed. There are different types of mastitis also.If I had a history like you have,I would be seeking a second opinion. All the best.xoxRobyn

  • Hi Jane,

I had mastitis many years ago when breast feeding, it was more like an infection, red and hot and sore.

As Blossom has suggested, you should seek a second opinion, go to a different GP and request to have a Mammogram and Ultrasound. This will then determine if they need to do a biopsy, either way I would be insisting on this being done, also go to a different place that did your ultrasound.

Take control, reassurance will stop you going mad.

  • Hello, did you have a mammogram and did they do a biopsy? If not I would be requesting that both of these diagnosis tools be done.

    All the best
