Urticaria after chemo

Hi All

I finished my fourth (and final) chemo on 19th November.  All going ok until 8 days after and I broke out in the most painful and itchy rash.  Oncologist told me it was a food allergy and to take Telfast.  I ended up at GP the following day who did a blood test for me and started me on Prednisone plus asked me to double dose Telfast.  Saw GP yesterday, bloodwork all good, still have the rash, not quite as bad.  He told me he believes it's urticaria caused by chemo.  Just wanting to find out if any others have had this same thing happen and how you controlled it/how long it lasted?

  • Hi

Haven't had a lot of ct scans so I'm guessing it is from chemo.  It did affect my hands for the first couple of days and they swelled up and were red and itchy. Rash just seems to go to random places on my thighs, tummy and arms.  I might give the Nurofen a go when it flares up quite badly.  The joys of side effects right?!?!

  • Thanks Robyn

I've been taking Telfast and it does help for the most part..however I'll get some Zyrtec today and see how that goes.  Waking up to it every morning is getting depressing and I'm beside myself trying not to scratch it!!

  • Just a thought, I've heard people talk of keeping the aloe gel in the fridge,,using it cool is apparently even more soothing ??

  • If you've been having a lot of ct scans it could be an allergy to the dyes.

I came up in tiny pustule blisters on my hands and feet but these useless doctors didn't seem to mind since it not life threatening only itchy and hot.

I took telfast and it was useless and since my hands were so red looking I tried Nurofen as an anti inflammatory. It worked! The red was gone surrounding the blisters and the itch abated. Days later I have lost the skin layer on 3 fingers as it just dried up and came away in one piece.

My two ct scans were within 18 days of each other which is probably why my body tried to get the dye out in some other extra smart way, through the skin.

  • Hello, yes I had the same thing on Docetaxel.I was given different things to try, creams and tablets, but the only thing that cleared it,and cleared it fast ,was Zyrtec.Cheers Robynxox

  • Thanks for the reply.  I was on Docetaxal too.  I'll give the aloe gel a go.  Hopefully this isn't too long lasting with the hotter weather we're starting to get.....

  • Hi, I developed a rash on Docetaxel, but it started after the first of 3 doses. Antihistamines & steroid ointment helped a little. I also used lots of moisturiser. I did try aloe Vera gel, & that gave temporary relief, too.

    Take care, Lyn
