To shave or not to shave ..?

Hi,

I wondered if anyone has some advice or could share their experience with me,

The chemo, I am told will result in hair loss - tis ok.. already organised a wig and cool scarves - but a girlfriend suggested I shave my head prior to chemo as the hair falls out in patches not evenly and it is hard to see hair on one's pillow, in your hairbrush etc

I would love to know how you may have managed this - did you shave prior to loss of hair, or did you let it fall out - which made you feel better - shave or watching it fall out and manage it as it fell out...

Thanks so much - I am a girly girl...and my hair is well I love my hair - it was in the middle of my back and did cut it short in prep for Chemo - that was ok, but now do I shave or wait for it it slowly fall out ..

would love to hear your experience or some advice

Linda

  • Hi Linda,

I too have had BC (breast cancer)  twice.  I was told each time my hair would start to fall out at around 14 days after first chemo... It was exactly then when it did!! I was like you the first time and got it cut short first. However once it started to fall out I had it shaved off. My second diagnosis my hair was short and full of chemo curls. For some reason it was harder to lose second time around. So this time I got it buzzed to about a number four. This was probably the worst decision I made as when those tiny short hairs started to fall out they were everywhere. I felt a bit bad as it was Mother's Day and we had booked into a resort for the night. OMG the poor cleaners, my hair was all over the place. My advice is keep your hair until you notice it falling out and then go the shave.

Its really ok once you get used to it. And it grows back strong and healthy.

    Big hugs to you.
