Taste
this post seems so trivial compared to everything else, but just wanted to ask what to do to get the most horrible taste out of my mouth? After each meal I usually rince with bicarbonate of soda for a mouth wash. It's really putting me off food although my appetite has not gone. So far the only thing I like eating is homemade pumpkin soup!

Maybe I'll try salt water solution instead of the bi carb? A friend in the UK suggested a product called gelclair. It's a gel you rinse your mouth out with although I think she used it to Ease up the pain of ulcers she had. Hoping I don't get those too!

Sweet things taste better to me. Generally I am a savoury person. It will be nice to get some sort of taste back even if it is just before next lot!! Hope you're going well Karen. I'll be thinking about you. X

Hi lindyloo, had the same problem except I'm finding anything sweets sets that awful taste of, I was given the Peter Mac mouth wash, biotene mouth wash and nystatin for oral thrush and must admit using these products for the last week has made a big difference to that awful taste seems to be a lot better now still very cautious about sweet things but taste seems a lot better also found my appetite never went as well, hope all is going well with your treatment, Glynnis x

Lindyloo,
Nothing is trivial!!
I know exactly what you mean. I just had #2 last Tues. & can relate to the bicarb mouth crap! I know it's a must. My taste is off too, no sweets, only soups of all types. I can relate to the extra salt cravings from earlier comments, I've added chilli to noodle soups for extra flavour. The only sweet drink I'm tolerating is ginger beer as I've found it's helping with the nausea.
I did find that as I got closer to having the next cycle, my appetite reemerged and my taste buds returned (ready for another onslaught of chemo)
Take care,
Karen xx

Yes, even water is horrid! Found that pumpkin soup works best. Hot chocolate to drink. Generally I am a savoury person but so far have only liked sweet things. Yes, Tracie, definitely different for everyone.. Thanks everyone for your feed back xxxxx

Hi Lindyloo, my oncology unit suggested that I suck on fruit tingles, and this certainly took that nasty taste away for me. Also, check your mouth for oral thrush, as I usually have that sort of problem post chemo. I use nilstat oral drops, and that usually clears it up. Warm wishes, Tracey B ??

Hi Lindyloo
Honestly I don't think anything takes that taste away but time. For me it only was really bad for a few days each cycle, I think it was by day 5-6 that even water tasted disgusting.
Believe it or not the last few chemos I would get cooking magazines to read, I was so looking forward to tasting food again!!! I had a sore mouth as well and many foods didn't go down well had to eat sloppy ones. And unbelievably salty foods went down well. Scrambled eggs with lots of salt was my post chemo fave and fish and chips!!.In fact anything laced with salt! - I went and brought the himalayan salt with dulce flakes in an attempt to pretend I was eating healthily. I used the biotene toothpaste (still do), but didn't like there mouthwash. I used bicarb as a mouthwash in the morning, and salty water in the avo. Don't ask me why but that combo worked - and I only washed my mouth out 4 times a day or it made it worse. Good luck with your treatment, and just remember it will pass.

Oh by the way Lindyloo... This is certainly not trivial....how much we take the sence of taste and smell for granted.
Got dad to pick up a pizza last night thinking it would be full of flavour...still waiting..couldn't taste anything.

Hi Lindyloo, its a horrid unrelenting taste...nothing seems to make it go. I tried chewing sugar free chewies but that tasted more like cardboard. I've found that I can sip on Ribena and today discovered I could tolerate small baked spud with bolognaise sauce.
It will be good if others do have other ideas that work...however I'm very quickly learning that this is also very individual. Shaz xxx
