Struggling with fatigue

Hello all
I was diagnosed in March with Stage 2 invasive carcinoma, mastectomy in April with 2 lymph nodes positive. Hormone and Her-2 positive.
I completed my 4 rounds of A/C and now have started on Pacliaxel and Herceptin. My reason for posting is the extreme fatigue. I’m battling guilt watching my husband trying to cope with work and looking after everything. Is this normal experiencing fatigue on Paclitaxel? Will it ease when I’ve finished the 12 doses? Has anyone found help going to speak to a councillor?
Thanks for any advice
  • It is a long road but it will end.  Honestly, it feels like emerging from a dim tunnel - you will get there.
  • Thank you lovely ladies for responding. It’s hard to think of the positive things (ie finishing chemo) and gradually getting better. It seems like a long long road at the moment that won’t end. I will try for my small walks again and see if that helps. And do only the things that need to be done if I can do them. Thanks again x
  • I was exhausted in taxol and got really depressed. Actually I found it harder than AC as it was weekly. However 3 weeks after finushing taxol I started to feel better and within 7 I was back working part time. No guilt lovely. You need to rest and recover. Try to get out a bit and do some gentle walks. I used to go to a hydro pool (sometimes I got sea sick in it due  to the  chemo though). If you get really short of breathe do tell your team. You will have your heart monitored throughout but thought I should mention it. Kath x
  • Hi Raelene. I am on the same regime. I had my fourth round of taxel last Monday. Exhausted. I never sleep during the day but I have had three nanna naps this week. We just need to let go of the guilt. As Lisa said, you didn't ask for BC so be kind to yourself. I have an appointment with the oncology psych on Tuesday but that is to discuss feelings of sadness. I just decided the exhaustion was a small part to pay even if it knocks me out I will get back up again! Love Melody
  • Yep! The fatigue is just awful.  Initially, I found taxol a bit better than AC but it caught up with me.  I'm 7 weeks out of it now and coping better but it still knocks me about and my onc tells me that's normal.  You and your husband just have to focus on the essentials and let the rest hang.
  • Hi @Raelene, the fatigue is quite normal and can last for quite some time after chemo is finished. Don't feel guilty, you didn't ask to get breast cancer. It takes a helluva toll on our bodies so be kind on yourself. If you need to rest, do so as you will only pay for it later. It's a shit of a rollercoaster and I bet if the situation was reversed with hubby, you'd be doing all for him. Counseling does help and you can get a mental health plan from your gp to give you 10 sessions a year . Also your hospital will have psychologists available to you.
All the best and please take care of yourself.
    Lisa
