Stomach issues on chemo
Finally started first Chemo session 3 days ago. Had a heavy head for a couple of days and now really quite uncomfortable with stomach issues. I feel like my food isn’t digesting but just sitting there for ages. Wondering if it’s constipation or something else? I have been going to the toilet but not as regular. Wondering if there are certain foods to avoid. At the moment I am staying away from dairy and bread as much as possible. Definitely bloated as well. What’s the best thing to take for nausea as metoclopramide doesn’t seem to be helping me much. Having read some of the discussions on this,it seems like there isn’t much that can be done.😔

- AfraserMemberI lost my taste buds almost entirely on paclitaxel. The good thing is that they come back fast after the last treatment. Enjoy what you eat again!
- kamadaMember@Nefertari I only had the yukky metallic taste after having paclitaxel unlike you. Had last one this week so chemo component finally finished!! Herceptin to continue and radiation starting in a couple of weeks. I can’t wait to be able to actually like the taste of food again. As for enjoying a nice hot cup of tea or coffee once again ....🥰☕️
- NefertariMemberOmg @Caz1...too late now ;)
I ate kilos of grapes and I still do as I love them, fruit is my weakness.
I don't drink red wine or eat peanuts whew. I ate loads of avocados too.
I discussed my diet with the oncology dietician and she never mentioned that. I think they were just happy I was eating something and that it was good food because I was losing so much weight despite the steroids.
There were very few things that I could eat as I had jaw and chewing problems, so things had to be squished and sort of swallowed with a minimum of chewing.
btw I have put on 500 grams woo hoo! - kmakmMember@Caibo Try cutting up a fresh pineapple into serves (three medium size chunks were good for me), and freezing them in single serves. My GP put me onto this and I found it brilliant. There's an enzyme in pineapple juice that's said to be good for digestion and reducing inflammation. Either way, I found it really cut through my chemo mouth. I ended up craving the stuff. I felt I could taste it, at a time when I could taste almost nothing. K xox
- AfraserMemberAflatoxin contaminated peanuts may trigger cancer. The chance of any serious level of aflatoxins in peanuts in Australia is very low. Some sites actually recommend grapes as ‘anti cancer’ foods! The only one I’d be certain of is that no doctor will recommend alcohol! Red, yellow, white or brown. Keeping to the (revised) minimum per week is safest ( apart from not drinking) but as it’s a trigger, not necessarily a cause, it’s hard to tell what other triggers alcohol may interact with. A well intentioned nurse told me breast cancer was ‘caused’ by cow’s milk. Again, ingesting high levels of dairy fat may also act as a trigger, for a few things, but that’s not the same as a cause.
- Caz1MemberChewing gum works for me with the yucky taste...my fave is extra strawberry flavour.
Fresh pineapple also worked for me. :)
@Nefertari, my dietitian, who is a specialist in oncology, warned me off grapes, red wine and peanuts. She reckons they can contribute to recurrence of breast Cancer. - CaiboMember@Nefertari like the sound of frozen fruit so much better than crackers. Will give it a go. Oooh the frozen yogurt ice creams also sound like a fun option. Good to know that there is a possibility that the bad taste will improve on the paclitaxel. Going to scout the supermarket aisles and health food shop and see if there is anything I can try. Thank you for your replies.Much appreciated at this challenging time. 🤗
- NefertariMember@Caibo, someone told me fruit tingles worked for them but they didnt work for me. I just drank loads of water and brushed my teeth and tongue :D then gargled with Biotene regularly. Biotene was very refreshing and was provided free from our public hospital.
I never got rid of it completely during AC but I used to pop frozen blueberries, watemelon, grapes in my mouth and take my time swishing them around and I lived on frozen yoghurt icecreams.
The good news is that the bad taste disappeared about 2 weeks after my AC finished and I started to enjoy food and my divine cup of tea on taxol :)
Hang in there, play around with the fruits, see what you like. - Blossom1961MemberI fortunately didn’t get that awful taste. The nausea was worse when I was moving about. The only way I could travel was to chew on celery sticks the entire travel time. Everybody finds something different works for them. Pineapple is a common relief and also helps reduce the metallic taste. Raspberries may also help with both. If you find a fruit or veggie that helps reduce the taste and nausea, you are also getting that extra fibre.
- CaiboMember@Blossom1961..trying to find the right balance between constipation and diarrhea. It seems like its either one or the other at the moment. And if you have any tips for getting rid of that taste in my mouth too.😩 Still cant seem to get rid of the nausea either. The ondansetron also leaving an awful aftertaste. Going to research and see if there are any alternative meds for nausea and then pass it by my doc.
