Side effects of tamoxifen

Hi I'm about to start tamoxifen after 6 months of chemo and 6 weeks of radiotherapy. To my dismay I've just found out that tamoxifen can lead to hair loss and thining. I'm only just starting to get a thin regrowth and looking forward to a full head of hair again. Has any else had long term hair loss from tamoxifen

  • Hi Jenny,

I have been on tamoxifen for six months. Hair has grown back very thick and curly (horrors!) so Tamoxifen hasn't had that side effect on me.

The other effects that annoy me the most are dizziness, metal confusion and dry blurry eyes. I am hoping these sort themselves out soon. When you have one treatment after the other it is hard to know which it is you have the side effects from?! Chemo  brain still who knows?

I hope soon your hair is blowing in the wind.

  • Thanks Christine. I'm happy that you have only had 2 side effects and hope this continues. You have given me peace of mind. Take care Jenny

  • Hi!  I have been on Tamoxifen for 11 months and I haven't experienced hair loss!  I must admit when I read your post I went Oh no!  that's not what I need! and indeed I haven't to date.

There is a long list of side effects and I am fortunate enough to experience only 2 annoying effects which I am not sure sure if it is Tamoxifen or my other medication, Zoladex, as the offender.

Hopefully you'll be fortunate enough to have minimal side effects.  Good luck with it!  Take Care

    Christine xx

  • It is same side effects as menopause and most women do not experience dramatic hair thinning with that,  so hopefully all will be good. Kath

  • Hi Jenny,

I have been on Tamoxifen for 7 months now after chemo and radiation and my hair is growing back thicker than ever!!  Most of the other side effects I experienced have really settled down now too.  Good luck!  Emma Xx
