Paclitaxel and tender finger & toenails

Just wondering if others have had tender nail beds, on Paclitaxel.
Is this a warning sign that nails will fall out, or other nail problem?
Amongst the list of side effects, some were to nails.
Some people say their scalps hurt, before hair fell out. Wondered if this is similar?
I have 4 weekly doses to go, including tomorrow.
I've been pretty lucky so far with Chemo, and side effects.
Nothing too serious, all manageable, so far.
  • Thanks to Afraser, Kezmusc, ddon, and Blossom for all of your interesting experiences and observations.
I shall just have to wait and see. 3 sessions to go.
  • @Afraser No one would believe it anyway. They would think we were delusional. 🤔
  • I am SO glad I didn’t know that 🙂 - weird toenails were bad enough. The stuff we end up knowing!! We could write a book - except no one in their right mind would want to read it!
  • I got blisters under my toenails. The Oncologist had never heard of it so I did the no-no and Dr Googled it. Yep. It is a chemo side effect, just not common.
  • My nail beds got very sore; I haven’t lost any nails but the sore ones became discoloured. So many disconcerting side effects!
  • @Abbydog,

Try coating your nails in a dark coloured gel polish.  One of the oncology nurses recommended this to me and I had no nail issues.  Good luck with the rest of the treatments lovely.
  • I soldiered on for 12 treatments - my feet were not good by the tenth, but didn’t get any worse. Still not right but then again I have no evidence of disease! Best wishes for the next four.
  • Thanks you Afraser.
Yes I am watching out for peripheral neuropathy. My Oncologist said he would prefer to shorten my number of treatments on Paclitaxel, if I have symptoms. If they were more than mild.
4 to go, if I have them all.

  • Hi @Abbydog

Paclitaxel can affect nails - I didn’t lose any, and my fingernails just got slightly discoloured but my toenails were split like veneer left out on the rain and went white, grey, black and brown! Grew out eventually!
But watch out for tingling sensations in toes and fingers - paclitaxel can also cause peripheral neuropathy - damage to nerve endings - and while that too usually clears up after treatment, it doesn’t always. Keep an eye on it and discuss with your oncologist. Best wishes.
