Lessons Learned

Good Morning Ladies,

Its been quite a ride for me this week and I have decided to share what I have learnt 10 days into my 1st ever chemo treatment.

Each day threw a new and equally horrible side effect at me, I was so wishing I would be one of those ladies that had :day 1 no side effect, day 2  no side effects, you get the picture I'm sure.  Oh no not for me the universe has thrown the gauntlet at me.

Anyway if I was to meet anyone in this situation I would suggest a few things in your tool box just in case.

!) The address and phone number of a 24 hour pharmacy.

2) Have some diarrohea medication at home in readiness for if or when it comes.

3) Lucas Paw Paw Ointment (or something that suits you) to manage the after effects.

4) Baby wipes or wet  wipes.

5) Anti Fungal Cream for if you get hot flushes and then the sweats.

6) Calamine Lotion or something equal for the rashes.

I think these are simple things to have at home not expensive and a real life saver in the middle of the night when the horrors start.

The other thing I found really difficult to deal with was the high, no-one told me about it and it was really a feeling of being completely out of control and extreme high anxiety. There is nothing to fix this but if i knew I would have not attempted going to work for those days.

Anyway being prepared is being forwarmed and I hope this will be of assistance to someone out there.

Today I am feeling not too bad, but I am just waiting now for what may come my way.

Have a lovely Sunday Ladies.

cheers

Donna

  • Hey Donna

    Link is http://www.bcna.org.au/user/9176/blog/28978

It is quite a long post now started originally by Shazinoz.

It is titled "what has helped you through your journey". I just put that into the search spot at top of page and found it. You can cut and paste your post to it as well.

Hope it helps. I found it wonderful. It should be placed permanantly somewhere on the website. I know the girls bring it up as a feature post regularly but it would be great if it could be there all the time for all you lovely newbies.

    Lots of love, Mich xoxo

  • I have heard of that post but looked and couldn't find it. do you have a link or can you tell me the string search perhaps?

I have drawn so much strength and support from this site that if what I have discovered helps someone then I am all for it so thank-you for adding my suggestions.

I know the side effects are dependant on the particular cocktail they have you on but my theory is why reinvent the wheel if there is a common theme then its likely to happen so be prepared.

I am feeling as close to my old self as I can now, thats after I have taken the diarrhoea medication, put the cream on my rashes and the lotion on my scalp, not too bad an effort for a Sunday.

    cheers and thank-you
