Is this normal?

I finished radiation treatment 6 weeks ago. I had the usual skin discomfort a few blisters that healed well and very sore boobs. After 4 weeks it all settled down but in the last couple of days I have had skin irritation on my left side and pain and it sometimes feels swollen and generally uncomfortable. So just wondering if anyone knows if that is normal. I thought I was over the side effects of radiation!
  • Hi - it's really normal for the after-effects of radiation to manifest a few weeks after the radiation has finished. It usually gets better before it gets worse but then gets better very quickly. Definitely have it checked out though. Wishing you all the best x
  • Hi May, I finished radiation 8 weeks ago.  I had the usual peeling, discolouration, itchiness during and after but no blisters and no pain.

About 4 weeks ago, I started getting very sharp pain in my nipple as well as under my arm and in the excision scar and where the lymph nodes were removed.

The nipple pain is random, sometimes sharp, sometimes aching, sometimes burning.  I got my GP to check/ feel, he says all is okay no swelling or lumps.  Yesterday I had my radiation oncology followup and he also said it is good and that pain .
I too was very worried but I feel better after speaking to the oncologist.   He is going to see me again and in 3 months and I will have another CT scan, hoping it all settles down by then.

  • I thought I'd got through completely unscathed after 2 weeks only to get some tenderness after 3 weeks. However, always see someone if you're uncertain.
  • It can take a couple of months for side effects to lessen after rads, @May20019 - even longer for some - with a wide variety of reactions as everyone is has had different surgery & treatment options.

If you are at all concerned - contact your Rad Onc for an assessment to put your mind at ease.  xxx
