Go the buzz cut or not?

Hi, I need some advice please?

My hair is falling out 3wks after first treatment at a fast rate of knots although I still have so much more more left.  My scalp is super sensitive and sore and itchy all at the same time.

It's a nightmare getting the hair out of my hats and considering getting clippers and taking the rest of the hair down to a number one.

Someone told me that this is worse and will be more itchy and even harder to get the short bits out of my hair.

Suggestions and recommendations wanted :)

  • Hi...I strongly recommend you to shave it all and get rid of this issue.  You'll prepare a lot of issues caused by Chemo, and shave the hair is one of the controllable issues that you can manage.  I shave the 1st day of my chemo... just no more than 5 min, it gone.

Enjoy the new look and let it re-grow later.

Take good care of yourself and stay happy.

    Cheers

  • As traumatic as it is for us women to loose our locks I personally felt I would be more traumatized loosing chunks everday. I also had my family to think about as they aren't coping too well so rather than loose everything at once I opted to shave. This gave us all time to adjust to my temporary new look. Everyone loved the look and I must say it wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined as I still have my brows, lashes and not a bad shaped head.lol. I had very long curly hair and yes its cold without it but I know it will grow back and curlier for some which means I ll probs grow back an afro.lol Maintain your scalp with coconut oil as it eases the itching. As this was a huge decision for me to make I didn't want to shave in a public place and because of the mass hair I had there was no way I could do it myself (and toodepressing) I invited my family and close friends for a barbecue and I turned it into a fun event. I felt it made it easier for everyone to getting use to my new look. (Avoids the shock looks by everyone). Good luck whatever you decide. It's all part of accepting our diagnosis.
  • Thank you for all if your wonderful advice. I got home yesterday after my 2nd treatment and my husband gave me the buzz cut. Omg the instant relief! Not sure if I could pull off a Sinead o'connor tune but it is what it is and I'm feeling so much better. Thankyou. :)

  • It's bloody painful even if you shave it all off but it's on a scale of 1 to 10 of pain about a 3 and it's more irratating than anything. I was surprised just how irratating it was for many weeks even though I clipped and shaved my head so it was shiny and bald. There is no easy answer, just suck it up and think about how it will look in 8 months time.......gorgerous and soft and just lovely. You can do it just like all of us in the past. It's only hair.

Merry Christmas and go girl you can do it.

  • I did exactly as the post above! I had the hairdresser shave it( recommended by my oncologist) and it was the best thing that I ever did.Cheers Robyn
  • I had mine shaved just after the first chemo. Like the others say. it just falls out everywhere and gets really annoying. When mine *really* started falling out after the shave, I just got in the shower one day and scrubbed my head til it was gone...I hated the patchy moth eaten blanket idea and was paranoid to touch my head or scratch as it made another bald bit.

Much easier and less hassle when it's finally gone.

  • Good mornng it is a personal choice, when I lost mine it was harder when it was falling out every time I touched my hair. I went to a hairdresser that I got my wig froom and she cut it off, It was hard watching it come dff and I cried but it was much better. It diidnt take long to get used no hair. The hardest thing at first was lookng in the mirror for a while but in all honesty this was nothing with eveything else that I went through.  I finished chemo in late June and my hair has come back thick and curly, big shock as I had staight hair before.

Take care what ever decision you make will be ok
