  • I've got a fungal nail infection on one big toe.  Looks hideous when wearing sandals.  I spoke to my excellent GP who arranged a path test that confirmed it was a fungal infection.  She talked about the options, first taking anti-fungal tablets or second using 'paint' on the nail itself.  Also, as a back-up she gave me a referral to a podiatrist in the area, if it proved difficult.

I said no to the medication.  At this stage, I didn't want any more chemicals floating around inside me.  But that I'd try the paint stuff first.  She gave me a prescription which I took to the pharmacy, which is a Compounding Pharmacy where they also make up ointments to their own recipe.

The pharmacist told me they'd developed their own process, based on information that had come in from the podiatrists.  First a cream has to be applied to the nail every day for 2 weeks.  He explained that t

his softens the nails so that when the later paint is put on, it's able to penetrate the nail & get to the fungal stuff underneath.

I've just finished the 2 weeks of cream application & will start the paint application in the next couple of days.  It will be applied twice a day for 4 weeks.

The cream is described as Urea and the paint is Fluconazole and Ibuprofen.

I'll have to see how this works.  The pharmacist says it has a good success rate, better than the commercial products which don't have one of those ingredients.

BTW I don't have to have chemotherapy.
