First chemo!
Hi everyone!
I had my first chemo session today, starting with AC. Though I was warned and given a strong anti-nausea tablet before they started, I was absolutely not prepared for the crippling nausea that has ensued!
I was fine throughout the treatment but on the way home it got worse and I've had waves that have had me over the toilet, sweating and gagging (but no actual vomit yet!). I have taken emexlon which seems to work for about 5 minutes and then the relief wears off. If it continues I will of course bring it up with my team but in the meantime, does anybody have any home remedies that have helped keep the nausea at bay?

- The only thing that worked for me was celery and only helped whilst I was munching on them. I carried around a container full everytime I left the house and slowly munched away. I only needed to do this for three to five days after each chemo infusion.

Thankyou for your lovely comment, I’m afraid my locks have departed.Had a short bob last week, made me feel like Rod Stewart! Now due to constant scalp ache my lovely daughter in law came for a care visit (baa humbug covid) and trimmed all off. So photo is just a reminder of a great day out at a rock n roll festival early last year. And happier days to come for us all. Good luck for your treatment too. - @Locksley, that numbing cream worked well a week after port insertion. The following day the port was accessed without it and OMG! The difference without it was extreme.
not letting anyone near it without the cream. So have cream … shall travel with it. Thankyou - @jm13 Just thought I would chime in. Wow, your hair looks good. I used the numbing patches that the NUM had made sure the oncology unit had, God bless her. Some oncology departments provide them, and I am not sure whether the numbing cream is as good because I only used the Emla numbing patches. Thankfully I didn't have to purchase them from the chemist, as there are enough expenses on this cancer gig. All the .best on your continued treatment.
- @jm13 I used numbing cream half an hour before each chemo session. It helped me a little. But any help is good help.
- @Mazbeth, I had my arm port site redressed yesterday. Looking fine. Though when nurse wiped actual port I jumped ! Woo!So the lovely nurse suggested use the numbing cream. I was sent home with five tubes of it.. only hope idont need it every time.Hope you feeling ok.

- Oh Girls, thank you so much. I had to have daughter in law come and give me a short do!! I was so upset when I was as covered by my hair, was more traumatic than I thought it would be. Couldn’t handle it all over the place.
had a shower and put on a lovely turban that dear friends gifted me. Went to bed and had proper beanie on all night… very odd!This morning I pulled beanie off, dressed myself then glanced in the mirror! I laughed myself silly as my ‘do’ had turned me into Rod Stewart! It was all standing straight up.
so from distress and tears to laughter that had me holding my sides. So I guess that’s what may happen afterwards.
Second chemo tomorrow, hoping cell count is up. Going to send my gorgeous man out to find g free gingernuts while I’m getting dosed up.
can def vouch for ginger slice in warm water. hydralite. Hoping the nausea doesn’t grab again.
Thanks for the support! I’m in Talbot. Vic. Let’s all keep getting well xxx - Hi @jm13, I had the same experience with the cold cap and I was surprised at how much my head hurt, it was so sensitive. I ended up getting it shaved which helped and I also wore a really soft bamboo cap. Silk pillow cases are also really good. I know it is disappointing to lose your hair - I was very sad - but you gave the cold cap a red hot go. You will find your time in the chair at each cycle will be a lot less when you aren’t using the cap. Sounds like you will be using your port for the next cycle. The one little piece of information I would like to give you is - you can ask for numbing cream to put on the port site before they access it. I didn’t know this and I never used it, I just kind of got on with the job. It wasn’t bad, but I do know that it varies from person to person - I guess I am just reassuring you that if you are uncertain about having the nurses access it, ask about the cream. Take care
