First chemo

Hi everyone, just feeling a bit sorry for myself and wondering how long does it take until you pick up again after each chemo cycle? I'm just exhausted on day 4 now, haven't felt like vomiting which is great. I'm on FEC for the first 3 then D for last 3. My fingers are a bit numb too. Also when can I expect my hair to start falling out? Skin goes a red on my face and chest sometimes too, good times, lol

  • Thanks for your replies and sorry about the post fail before, I'm new to this site and didn't realise till I saved it, oops! It's good to know what's ahead, starting to get headaches now so must be the onset of the scalp burn and hair loss like Deanne said. Thanks for reassuring me, I really needed that! Hope to feel more like me soon xx
  • I was on 4 x AC which is similar to FEC and 4 x Taxatere (Docetaxel). I had my infusions on a Friday and (on the AC) by the Monday or Tuesday in week one I always felt the worst and slowly picked up by the following Friday. Week two was always blah, I felt incredibly tired and had trouble with digestion and constipation. But by week three I had bounced back enough to feel pretty normal just in time for the next dose. When I changed to Docetaxel it was worse than AC for me so I didn't pick up until nearly time for the next dose. My oncologist cancelled the last D cause she didn't think it was worth the risk of the neuropathy in my fingers and toes getting worse or even becoming permanent. This may not happen to you though. I recently read a post where a lady breezed through the D drug and found it much easier to take than FEC. Luckily I had no trouble with mouth sores throughout the chemo and nausea was quite minimal. Just remember that everyone's experience with side effects are different and you will find how to deal with yours. As Deanne said, let your medical team know what your are experiencing, no matter how insignificant, and they will adjust things and help you through. I keep a written list for my Onc and she appreciated it. My hair also fell out after the first two weeks but I had cut it quite short beforehand. Even so, it's still quite a trauma when it does start to go. My husband shaved my head because my scalp was really sore and itchy. I still cried though for the loss of it. My eyelashes and eyebrows thinned but didn't completely fall out until I was almost finished chemo. Take it one day at a time and before you know it you'll be through. Love to you Janey xxx

  • Somehow this post ended up in 2 spots. I replied to you on the blog Newly Diagnosed but in case you don't find that comment here goes again. So sorry you are not feeling good. I too have been on 3 x FEC and 3 x D chemo. Am just 2 weeks away from last D. Good news is it does go quickly and it does end! I found it took about a week or so to get over each dose. Always let your doctor and chemo team know about what side effects you experience so that they can help where possible. I found the exhaustion got better for me after day 5 with FEC. The red face and neck are probably a reaction to the DEX steriod medication that you take for the first couple of days after Chemo. My hair started to fall about 2 weeks after first FEC. It took a week or so and I found it helped to have it shaved once it started to go. I had a headache at this time and my scalp was quite painful. Hope this helps and that you start to feel better soon. Look after yourself. Deanne xx
