Femara and supplements

Hello everyone. Was wondering if anyone who is taking Femara and experiencing joint pain, taking any supplements like magnesium and/or glucosamine chondroitin. I get a little concerned when combining Femara with natural supplements. Not sure if it's safe. Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

  • I have the odd day after doing lots of activity. Movement and panadol osteo sort it out.
  • I used to take glucosamine chondroitin for my ageing knees before BC, but stopped as for a short while I was on warfarin, due to some heart issues post chemo (not a good mix). As I am still on blood thinners, but not warfarin, I haven't gone back to glucosamine but take fish oil with my medicos' OK.

I have been on Femara for over 3 years and haven't had any pain, thank heavens, but was warned before starting that I might have arthritis type pain, particularly in the hands. As I already had a degree of peripheral neuropathy in my hands (worse in my feet) I wasn't thrilled but no side effects that I know of so far. I also take magnesium, vitamin B and D and calcium (all again suggested by medical staff). Shake me and I rattle, but no pain is no pain! Good luck.

  • Hi Bellaxel
I was prescribed Femara in July 2015 and took if for nearly 12mths.  During that time i had really bad lower back pain, pain and 'locking' in the knuckles of my hands - felt like an 80yr old most of the time.  I took both magnesium and gucosamine and did not help any - even doubled the dose. i also took supplements fish oil, calcium and Vit D. My doctor took me off Femara and prescribed Armidex instead - said for some reason that no-one can explain switching meds will stop the aches and pains..  The switch has worked for me - i only have mild pain in my hands only, which i can live with, take one magnesium tablet a day (plus fish oil, calcium and Vit D), so feel a lot more comfortable about staying on this for the next 9 years (who is counting)!
    hope this helps
