Dry mouth and painful lips.

To say my lips are burning is such a cliche but they are - literally.  No matter what lip balm I put on or how often I apply it doesn't help!  I've just been through second treatment and I know it will eventually ease  (not leave completely) but its just horrid.  My mouth feels like I have drank.acid ...its as dry as , and I've lost taste for everything! (and my coffee was only thing keeping me sane :) )  I do my mouth hygiene regime but I cant honestly say it helps.   Does anyone have suggestions that I can try please.  Really appreciate help xx
PS: Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere...I did try and find some answers, but I gave up because I am having an emotional moment and tears clouded screen!!  :'(

  •  I used the artificial gel saliva, and kept it in my handbag, it worked temporarily, but the dry mouth was one of  the most awful side-effect from chemo, I hated it.....
  • hello i also suffer from dry mouth/chappy lips. My doctor worked out it was also because I drank too much water. I now add a litre of coconut water to get electrolytes in - another trick was OJ + Sparkling water + a pinch of salt.

I use Biotene toothpaste + Mouth wash.  It helps.

Re lips - please take this the right way but it might be herpes virus - as i understand (NOT A DR) the herpes virus is responsible for cold sores and well the herpes virus activates when your immune system is suppressed. I never had a visble cold sore in my life but I carry Herpes simplex (as does like 80% of population apparently)- responsible for cold sores and can present in mouth as mouth ulcers - that happened to me.  Try speaking to the oncologist or nurse and see if it might be herpes related as that might change what medication they can provide?
  • Anything ginger ... Ginger tea, ginger gummy bears, crystallised ginger.
I ate vegemite with everything . I loved the saltiness .
Good luck ! It's what I remember most of all about chemo. The desperate nastiness of my mouth . Xx
  • Liquid coconut oil can help. It's expensive and a bit gross but if you roll a teaspoon full around your mouth and spit it out that might help. Or you can swallow it, it's good for you. Soda water was my drink of choice and makes a good mouthwash as the bubbles help fizz all the crud off your tongue. Mxx
