- melclarityMemberYes my oncologist said if you only have taxol it may be successful but as i had Fec prior he said it doesnt work. X
- angiesgMemberYes I used cold caps when I had my 12 weeks of Taxol treatment. Retained all my hair and yes it was not the most comfortable of procedure but well worth it. I had some thinning but hardly noticeable at all to others. This was 2.5 years ago and today my hair is as thick as ever.
if you look under my posts you should find the post where I explained the whole process. Best of luck with it, I personally think it’s worth giving it a try. For me the emotional part of not losing my hair was a huge factor in my recovery, nobody was defining me for having cancer, as your common person had no idea what was happening. - melclarityMemberI did Fec and my oncologist was very honest and said it wouldnt work well on this particular chemo in his experience of patients. I hated losing my hair absolutely but treatment was so hard i couldnt have coped with the time and pain of cold cap on top.

- SisterMember@Lillianne It really is a suck it and see. Doesn't work at all for some, kind of works for some, and does really well for some. The important thing is to make sure it fits snugly so try to get a nurse who understands it to do the initial fitting. Then they'll often put a cap that's a size smaller on top to help. Then make sure that the sizing of both caps is recorded - best you keep a record yourself. You'll have to ensure during the treatment that it has good contact with the scalp everywhere. I reckon it's worth a go. I chose to stop when I felt that it wasn't working well enough for me after two treatments but if my bald spot hadn't been so hard to hide, I probably would have continued. And if it doesn't work, it's not the end of the world.
- BlondyMemberLilliane the cold cap is worth it. I was given a sedative to take 30 mins before starting, which knocked me out and gave me much needed sleep after the wakefulness of the steroids from the day before. I went without the sedative on the last chemo and as I had reduced hair I must have taken leave of my senses. It was like childbirth, but it gradually wore of. Definitely recommend the sedative. Didn't cost me anything except time and I was in no hurry to go anywhere. No one can say how much hair will shed. It's all individual. I shed about 50% with extra loss above the temples and a patch at the back below the crown. It shed for a much longer period, about 5 weeks after my final chemo mid Feb. The place where I lost it most is now about 1/4 inch long. It's all growing every which way but happy to see I've got some. Good luck with yours.
- AnonymousReally didn’t like the cold caps as they were isolating and I couldn’t hear very well. Kept my hair for a few months, but next time would have less pain and less time in the chair. All the best.
