Chest tightness

Hi all, I had my first chemo on the 31st Dec - all seemed to go well, that night came down with some nausea and wanting to vomit but after some sleep felt less nauseas in the morning. Really I am tired and fatigued more than anything. I have noticed today though that my chest feels tight, not on my heart side but over my right side, is this a symptom of chemo? I am unsure how to go with symptoms and what is normal or not, don’t have a temp and feel fine other than sore chest. Appreciate any advice as a bit scared this is not working.
  • Thanks @Sister, rang them and they were ok. Still learning when I should call them, good to know I can speak to them anytime
  • Thanks @Mazbeth, I think mine could be related to anxiety, I am looking at seeing a Counsellor and getting some state goes to help, there is so much support so I need to use this. Sleep was ok for me while on steroids it’s the last few days that have seen me waking at 1am and not getting back to sleep - another reason why I would say I was so tired.
I am trying each day to do a little walking and keep somewhat active 😊
  • Thanks all, I spoke to the oncology ward, they said if the pain is on the side where the tumour is and was localised and not radiating it could be pain from shrinking, not sure how likely that is after 1 session but will speak to my onc next week when I catch up with her, was advd to take Panadol and if no better by that evening to go to the ED. Took Panadol and pain seems to have subsided - maybe it is anxiety.
@arpie, they did give me anti nausea tablets, I am finding I am getting by with only 1 in the morning as nausea is ok, it’s just the bone weary exhaustion that is getting to me.
  • My advice is always to contact the clinic with anything concerning.  I had shocking nausea and reflux starting 24 hours after my first chemo and the meds they had given me made no difference.  I didn't realise that I could bug them on the weekend and so spent some extremely miserable days where I couldn't lay down and I couldn't sit up for more than a few minutes.  Rang the clinic on the Monday and had a script faxed to the local chemist for better meds and it all changed.  So, ring up straight away to tell them about the nausea and the chest tightness.
  • Hi @CarrieP, I finished chemo in May 2019 and I remember the anxiety I had ‘waiting’ to see what symptoms I would have after a round of chemo. I know the medical team have to tell us about the ‘possible’ symptoms, but gosh it can cause some stress. I had a similar reaction to you in terms of the nausea - I really made sure I took the medication at the slightest feeling of nausea and that worked well. I was also incredibly fatigued, I became a permanent fixture on the couch.
The steroids they have given you will help with any nausea (but I still took the other tablets religiously for the first couple of days as well) but they may also prevent sleep. I just slept when I could, so my sleep patterns were crazy.
Give your nurse a call if you can to discuss the tightness you are feeling. You will find that you ‘settle in’ to the routine of chemo and you will also get to know the days where you just need to lie around and the days when you can get up and about.
You may not feel like it, but a gentle walk worked well for me - not far, just a stroll. Try to keep drinking water to flush your system - water with cordial; water with some lemon juice; sparkling water etc. I also tried the ‘dry’ ginger ale - not the really sweet one. I ate whatever I felt like - smoothies, egg on toast for breakfast - and sometimes at any time of day thanks to steroids.
Oh, I also found that I was so anxious before the first round as I really did not know what to expect, but after the first one was done, I felt almost relieved to be on the road and realised that I could do it. You are now on the road and doing it too! Take care, be gentle with yourself. M x
  • Sorry to hear you've been crook @CarrieP - and hope the nausea doesn't return.  Did they give you meds to combat it?  My husband took his religiously to not let it get a hold & it worked for him.

Re the chest tightness - definitely call your Onc and let them know & call 000 if it persists.  Heart symptoms don't always confine themselves to the left side of the chest.

take care xxxx. Let us know how you go. xx
