Chemo and mouth ulcers. Any cures????

Hi. I'm about to have my 3rd round of FEC chemo on Thursday. I've  coped with most of the side effects but am now suffering from very painful and relentless mouth ulcers. Despite regular sodium bicarbonate and biotene mouth washes, they have hung around about 8 days and showing no sign of healing. Does anyone have any tips or miracle cures.....

  • Hi Jenny,

I tried the above as all and then bought Nilstat and it worked wonders within a couple of hours,  Hope that helps have a great new year.

  • Hi Jenny, like the other ladies have said, Nilstat works well if you have thrush. It's an anti fungal treatment, so if you don't have thrush it won't do much. There is a mouthwash you can buy at the chemist called DifflamC, it's an antiseptic plus anti-inflammatory and works like a local anaesthetic for your tongue. So it not only eases the pain but helps reduce the inflammation and heal the ulcers. I did find it a bit strong on my sore mouth so I watered it down half strength and it really helped, only used it 2-3 times a day and salt water in between. Good luck with it, hope you find what works for you. Kind regards, Tracey

  • Hi,

i also found salt water rinses the most effective. But at first found no difference - it was only when I stepped it up and started carrying around a water bottle of salt water and did all day that I kept the ulcers at bay.

Also, biotine is a moisturizing mouth wash that I used plus sm33 mouth gel for the pain. There's also an oral cream that keeps your mouth moist. Plus lemonade icy poles - heaven when your mouth is sore.

All the best in finding what's best for you and in your recovery.

  • Hi Jenny,

I also had the mouth ulcers with the FEC and I was told by my Oncologist to use a product you can buy it over the counter at the Chemist It's called NILSTAT and it is fantastic I still keep it in my fridge and I was told while using Nilstat to stop salt water rinsing and also the rinsing with Bi Carb Soda as it agrivates it and this cures it, the chemo nurses also told me to use it, I hope it works for you as the mouth ulcers are horrible I now only have 3 cycles of chemo to go including today and I can't wait until I'm finished, sending you a cuddle and a smile.

  • Hi jenny

I did the salt water rinses as advised but still got the ulcers. I got bad oral thrush as well which hung around for ages. Nothing really helped me unfortunately. From memory bonjela does help i have used it in the past as i am prone to mouth ulcers. It does have a strong taste though so you may not be able to stomach it during chemo. Sorry i couldnt be of more assistance.

  • Hi Jenny, I found many and regular salt water rinses assisted me, but never found a miracle, I am sorry to say. Cubes of  ice was soothing, and good nutrition certainly helped them heal quickly. Eleven years on for me and I still remember the experience, but, hey, I am still here. Be kind to yourself! x x Mandy
