Blood pressure - bi lateral mastectomy

Since surgery I use my leg for blood pressure readings -I am surprised at the number of medical professionals who have never encountered this before. I only had sentinel node removed on right side but had extensive cording. What do others do?
  • Hi Zoffiel I know it is a pain - I worry about Lymphedema so make sure they use leg - the larger cuff usually works for me especially if placed lower down. While in hospital we only did BP if there was an issue with other obs as it was quite painful. Chemo caused a number of clots in left leg so I avoid that limb as well!
  • Hi primek have you had any nodes removed from other side? If so, why do you choose to avoid sentinel side?
  • I only avoid BPs on my sentinal side not the other.
  • I don't worry too much about it most of the time. I was meant to have a 24 hour monitor on last year but refused it because of the frequency of the inflations. I ended up taking a machine home for a few days and testing myself every couple of hours, or after my activities changed, and keeping a spreadsheet which I took back in. The cardiologist wasn't thrilled, but it was that or nothing. In the end, she grudgingly admitted the data was useful because I had documented what was going on at the time.
I know I 'should' be more pedantic about blood pressure cuffs, but I've had a double mastectomy, endless puddling around in my armpits and my legs are too chunky for most cuffs anyway. Pffhht.
