Aches and pains with AC chemo

Hi lovely ladies!

Almost 4 weeks ago I had a left mastectomy with expander put in, then 6 days after the surgery I started AC chemo (which is every 2 weeks), and right before my initial chemo I had a picc line put in.

I've been sick with a sinus cold since before I went for my mastectomy, so I've been feeling rotten even without all the other stuff my body is going through, so I'm not sure if that could be contributing. I can't seem to shake it, although to be honest I'm no longer sure if it's a side effect or an actual cold, I'm a bit of a mess. Oh and I also had the Neulasta injection for round 2.

But I was just wondering - I've had 2 rounds of chemo now, and I've found both times that my mastectomy site and the picc line just ache relentlessly - it's the worst of the side effects for me. Both things have healed really well so I don't think it's infection (I'm seeing my plastic surgeon next week but my breast care nurse said it looks fantastic).

I'm seeing my oncologist this week so I'll ask about it, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this? I know it's only 4 weeks post mastectomy for me, but is this something I can expect after each round of the AC chemo? I'm then moving to weekly Taxol which I hear is easier but I don't know what to think any more.

Sorry - this sounds a bit like a sob story, I'm all over the place! Feeling a bit down in the dumps this week... I was so positive I was going to be one of those women who just take chemo in their stride and carry on life as per normal but apparently it's not to be :(

  • Hey Naomi,

Firstly sending a big hug!!! and to let you know you are not alone, we hear you and totally get it. Im still pending my mastectomy, but unfortunately Ive had Breast Cancer twice in 4yrs even after treatment 4yrs ago. My Chemo went 4.5 months last year and even with all good intentions and plans I had on how I would be also one of those women that just manage really well. I was super unlucky, drug sensitive and incredibly ill and had to give up work, which was so difficult being a single parent. I found the minute I sat back and realised this will be how it will be, I let go of all expectations and especially of myself. I put me first and that helped so much mentally and emotionally. Im 8 months post Chemo now and my left breast still aches from 2 lumpectomies and radiation of 4yrs ago. So I do think yes its time it went, which Ive struggled with. Chemo is so hard and honestly, youre allowed with everything youre going through to have your down days! Give yourself permission! damn you have earned it! The good news is no two days are the same, and you will improve and mend. I still have side effects from chemo and Arimidex and strangely the ONLY thing that has helped in all this time is a Kinesiologist. Bizarre! Be gentle with yourself, and remember its ok to feel whatever you feel, so normal.

Step at a time, nurture you each step, you will get there!

    Hugs

  • Hello Naomi, natural to be all over the place! Your post doesn't sound like a sob story.....my goodness you are going through so much and it's such a huge experience we have to adjust to.  Stay positive, yes we would like it all to go smooth but we are all different. My chemo went ok but I contacted shingles and ended up in hospital.   Important to have the neulasta injection. I was also told to stay away from crowded places, as our immune system is low and we can catch things (infection) easy.

Remember there is so much help out there, our Drs and specialist, breast nurses and this BC site, we are always here for you.

Hope your sinus cold clears up.

  • I'm  shocked you started chemo that quickly. ..I was made to wait 6 weeks. Anyways with each round of AC my mastectony scars would ache and feel tighter. When I told my team they scratched their heads. Eventually, at my suggestion, they realised I was getting trunkal oedema that was most likeky due to the steroid withdrawal. It resolved prior to each chemo. I wore a variety of different bras....sone aaaah type ones or erilan clip up or sometimes none ...depending on the day which felt right. A shapewear singlet helped.   Also is the picc line on your node removal side?. I found I also got tightness between elbow and wrist on this side which was cording...but worsened after chemo then would improve. Tell your team. They may have ideas. Take care. Chemo as well as mastectomy is hard. You have rvery reason to feel miserable. But 2 more AC to go. Taxol is different. I still got the tightness though. Kath x

  • hi Naomi,

I have pain in my breast bone side while on AC, double check with your BC nurse or Oncologist about the pains.... I used clear quartz crystals to help me with the pains... I prefer natural if I can as I have numerous allergies to meds.

its ok to be down and needing reassurance...

I will let you know I needed over 9 months of chemo due to my allergies.

I am here 4 years later and I am cancer free  be gentle on yourself. and you will get thru this.... take time to rest

  • Hi Naomi - it is natural to feel a bit down in the dumps - it's a huge adjustment to go through, mastectomy, expander and chemo and all the other poking and prodding.  Don't feel that you should be strong all the time.  Yes an inner strength comes when you need it but you're also in turmoil coming to terms with it all so yes there is a feeling down occasionally.

As to everything hurting, it is still early days and aches and pains turn up in what I consider to be most unexpected places.  The pad of my right foot gives me curry but more so when I am tired out.  Long distance from my left breast I know but it's all about the side effects and the body adjusting.  And my left breast still aches occasionally, especially if the weather turns!

Be kind to yourself and remember we all react differently to treatment.  Your Breast Care Nurse is a great source of help

    Take care from Christine xx
