Zoladex experiences

Hi everyone. Just started tamoxifen this year and the plan was to start zoladex once my menstrual periods returned (I'm 34). But onco said we can fast track that and start the injections sooner rather than later (eventhough I still haven't a cycle since round 2 of AC chemo April 2019). Just dreading this injection and once again being a human pin cushion. Can anyone share their experiences with zoladex? Is it a big painful injection?
  • Thanks @MariaT,
I shall be buying the elma patch/cream.
  • Hi @pinkcloverss, I’ve just had my first zoladex needle. Put on emla patch/cream 2 hrs prior and didn’t feel a thing. I was dreading it but no problem at all. Purchase emla cream from chemist. No script required. Feeling a lot more comfortable about the next one. Goodluck!
  • Hi @Pinkcloverss  I am on Tamoxifen and Zoladex.  I don't find the needle itself too bad, more painful than a regular needle but it only takes a minute and then it's over.  I really struggle with fatigue for 2-3 days after the needle and then my body seems to regulate.
  • The Zoladex was not too bad, but I HATED having to go to the doctors every month just to get pricked.  There was no point in me keeping my ovaries, so I had them removed - no more zoladex!  I feel like I am more in control of my life now.

Make sure you have your bone density checked every now and then.
  • Hi @Pinkcloverss, I've found it manageable, although bigger than a regular needle.

If you can get your hands on a numbing patch, put it on 2 hours before, makes a huge difference!
  • Hi @Pinkcloverss
I am the same as JennyD above, it wasn't a problem.  My first was with my Onc and then he was happy for my GP to administer the rest.
They have to be regular and mine was every 4 weeks x 26 so it took 2 years.
My GP always used a local first and he would alternate each month, left and right abdomen.  I found the left side I would have a funny tummy for a couple of days and the right was fine!  I think my body was still wanting to cycle and this injection said No you don't!!
Honestly you will be fine, I think it is more scary when these things are suggested and you don't know enough about it!
In the grand scheme of everything I went through this was okay!  Make sure the appointments are regular.  I always made the next appointment before I left so I wouldn't miss!
Take care and best wishes as you navigate your way through treatment and a good outcome!
  • HI @Pinkcloverss I didn't find the Zoladex injection that bad.  I had mine done by my GP and she would give me a local first, then the Zoladex.  It was in the fat of my stomach too which always hurts less than the more muscly/firm bits like arms.
