Side effects hormone therapy

Well my surgery went well and I have been given the all clear YAY...I don't have to have radiotherapy but my next issue is weather to go onto hormone therapy...my surgeon discussed the side effect etc with me today and I'm meeting with my oncologist in the next week...he has advised that I'm at risk of clots because of my varicose veins....and all the other side effects are doing my head in. It's like damed if I do damed if I don't ??

  • Thanks Meclarity
it certainly is a back and forward conversation I'm having in my head lol My mother is on Aromasin due to the fact of her risk of blood clots.  Just have to wait on what the oncologist comes up with.
  • It's really difficult to know, as if you don't need any treatment, I know I have friends in the U.S. and here similar situation and they were not recommended hormone therapy, as they were that early. Latest research out from the National Breast Cancer Foundation says it doesnt work in 1/3 of cases. Its the only logical explanation as to why I had a recurrence at 4yrs, it also means that Radiation didnt work either. My Oncologist said in my case Arimidex is much better and different so hopes it works. All you can really do is what you feel in your gut Nads, its bit like me taking a gamble and having a Mastectomy in case I have a recurrence again, but I may never either, you know?? it just has to be what youre going to be ok with doing. x
  • Adjuvant! Website has been down since the end of October. It's considered to be a better predictive tool than Predict ( which uses almost laughably narrow scientific data) so, Predict it is as far as easily accessible stats about the efficacy of treatments until Adjuvant is back on line. Considering how far they cast their next, I wouldn't be surprised if they disappear and we are left with a tool (Predict) which is based on studies from the British Midlands years ago.
A good. Oncologist would be reading all the articles and partnering in research projects. But then they would have no time to eat or have a life, so I can understand why they use a third party to figure out what is current.

I got the shits with some pretty minor side effects of Tamoxifen and stopped taking it about 4 years in. If I'd known then what I know now, I'd have kept taking it for 10 years. It may, or may not, have made a difference to my current circumstances. I'll never know, but I do wonder.
  • Yeah that is a biggie with regards to reacurrance not taking it or taking it? Just have to wait and see what one says.
  • I was thinking more of the stats of recurrence risk if you didn't have it. Your oncologist will be the one with the answers. Tamoxifen is now approved for women on pbs that just have a shocking family history with or without an affected gene. Goodluck with your decision.
  • Thanks Melinda
Yes they are talking Tamoxifen..my mum had the same so that is why they are leaning towards this.  So much to think about.
  • HI Nads,
Thats great you need nothing further not even Rads! find it odd then that they even want you to take hormone therapy so are they saying Tamoxifen? Id wait and see the advice from your Oncologist, I was on Tamoxifen for 4yrs and had a recurrence. I guess it also depends on what your path results were in full as to whether its of any benefit or not. Hugs Melinda xo
  • Hi there
he spoke about stats and there wasnt enough for women my age or younger on the long term side effects...my oncologist is looking into this further before my appointment next week so hopefully she might have some more information for me.
  • Ask for stats with and without of recurrence. Did he offer suggestions re clots...like 1/2 aspirin a day? They have to tell you all risks but it doesn't  mean you will get all side effects.
