Second surgery

Well I am back in hospital and am 2 days post surgery for a level 2 axillary dissection. Must admit I am finding this far more painful than my mastectomy. A lot of nerve pain rather than the actual wound though! I am off to see the medical oncologist in two weeks to find out how much chemo I have to have, but as I will also have to have some hormonal treatment (ER+ PR+) I am wondering if I am better off opting to have my ovaries removed and if I can does that mean I dont have to take other hormonal treatments? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Therese

  • Thank you for your replies. This gives me more food for thought as to what path I will take! Regards, Therese.
  • Yes there can be a lot of nerve type pain after lymph node surgery. I still find it feels quite abnormal (14 months later) with numb areas, some nerve twinges and aching at times. Make sure you do your exercises to get full movement back in your arm. Unfortunately I think you will find that even removing your ovaries, people still need to take the hormone therapy. This is because other parts of your body can still produce estrogen but see what your oncologist says about this when you see them. Best of luck with your recovery and treatment. Chemo is not easy but they do have some terrific medications to help with the side effects. Take care. Deanne xxx
