Break from Herceptin

I had a call from the oncologist this morning to let me know yesterday's heart scan was low and they want me to stop Herceptin for awhile until my heart gets stronger, after 4 1/2 years my heart has finally reacted So now is the worry of what happens if I dont have Herceptin and how long will it take for my heart to get strong enough to restart treatment. In a way I am thinking of it as my body having a drug holiday even though I will still be having Femara, with luck some of the side effects will ease.

  • Thanks for the suggestion MandaMoo I will check on there, I have heard of the site but haven't been to it so I will definitely do so now.

  • Hi Vanessa

I have been Herceptin long term as I am stage 4 HER2+ ER+ my mets are in the lungs apparently Herceptin and Femara together was the best option for me and it has worked great until now.

Because I am also on Femara it is hard to say which medication causes what side effects but I have really bad hot flushes which I am told is Femara as well as joint pain. I do know Herceptin has caused the dry sore nose and fatigue. All the side effects are manageable even the hot flushes although sometimes they are still really bad.

Good luck with your treatment it is a wonder drug and I am sorry I can't continue with it.

  • Can I suggest that you go and have a look at the Her2support.org website.  Many women there who are long term herceptin users have had this issue and there are many helpful suggestions.

    I hope all stays well.
